Background

At the beginning of the Detective Conan series, Shinichi is a fairly famous high school detective who frequently helps the Tokyo police solve murder mysteries.
One day, Shinichi brings his friend Ran to a local theme park called Tropical Land, to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there. As they are leaving, Shinichi heads off alone to follow a suspicious man in black, Vodka, who was a suspect in the earlier murder. Shinichi witnesses a blackmail exchange between Vodka and a company president in a secluded area just outside the park, but is too engrossed to notice Gin, Vodka's partner, sneak up from behind. Gin knocks him out and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as APTX 4869, and they then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurs: his body shrinks into that of his six year-old self. After escaping from well-meaning but skeptical park security, with nowhere else to go Shinichi heads home. He there runs into his next door neighbor and close family friend, Professor Agasa, who warns him that he must keep his identity secret because the Black Organization will kill him and others associated with him should they discover the truth.

Conan Edogawa, the "small" Shinichi

Conan Edogawa

Personality

At the beginning of the series, Shinichi is a 16-year old (17, according to the anime) student at Teitan High School. He is already well-known as a brilliant young detective, the "Savior of the police force", for solving many difficult cases that the professionals could not. Shinichi was born to Yusaku Kudo, a mystery writer, and Yukiko Kudo, a former movie star. He is extremely intelligent, and even from a young age, was very intuitive and observant. Due to the influence of his father and the general laissez-faire environment at home, he has long been an incessant and persistent reader, especially of mystery novels. Yusaku started taking Shinichi to crime scenes as a child, which inspired him to be a detective. Due to his genius and often blunt, informal approach, Shinichi can be rude and arrogant. However, he cares deeply about human life, unable to understand how any reason could be sufficient motive for murder, and is convinced that driving a culprit to suicide is no better than murder itself. The few times he has been too late to save a life haunt him throughout the series.
Besides his intelligence, Shinichi is an extremely skilled soccer player, having been professionally scouted at school but choosing to stay at the amateur level. He initially played to hone his reflexes and often juggles a ball to clear his mind, but he is also an enthusiastic fan of the sport in its own right. Shinichi is also known for his inability to sing, but was revealed to have perfect pitch. He is also shown to play the violin in Movie 12, taking after his idol, Sherlock Holmes. He is well-educated in English, as he once conversed with and translated for an American diplomat, and later solved a case in London without evidence of any language barrier. Prior to his transformation, Shinichi enjoys being in the spotlight, reveling in making local headlines and receiving fan-mail, and has a flair for the dramatic like his mother that can be seen every time he sets out a deduction in pieces building to a climax. Throughout the series, Shinichi's predicament forces him to gain a sense of humility. Despite his popularity with the masses and his schoolmates, he has very few close friends. As Shinichi he was close to Ran and Agasa, and after deaging befriended Heiji, Haibara, and to some extent the other Detective Boys.

Appearance

Shinichi has a striking resemblance to his father, Yusaku Kudo, sporting the same dark brown hair, slightly paled skin, and facial structures. The only traits he doesn't share with his father is the mustache and round glasses. The only physical feature he inherited from his mother, Yukiko Kudo, is his blue eyes. He often appears in his high school uniform, but he also wears fine suits and a tie, or regular clothing depending on the occasion.

Skills

Detective skills

Shinichi is very skilled as a detective often earning him comparisons to Sherlock Holmes. Shinichi has acquired various nicknames because of his prowess, such as the "Heisei Holmes" and the "Detective of the East". He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any "strange points", in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. This comes from his photographic memory, of being able to remember every abstract of an investigation. Shinichi's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Shinichi has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading as a child.

Athletic ability

Besides intelligence, Shinichi also has amazing athletic ability, partially derived from playing soccer, his favorite sport. In order to defend himself and others from criminals, Shinichi has perfected a signature, powerful precision kick to knockout criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Shinichi's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.
Aside from soccer, Shinichi exhibits a knack for handling firearms due to his father taking him to firing ranges from time to time. During the Clocktower Heist, Shinichi is able to shoot and dislodge the support beam of a giant projection screen, which Kaitou Kid had placed in order to fool a crowd of onlookers, with a single shot from a moving helicopter.
Shinichi is nimble; in the manga he is capable of considerable acrobatics, jumping great distances and swinging from tree to tree to escape onlookers. The anime and movies augment Shinichi's athletic abilities in addition to what is shown in the manga. In the anime, Shinichi appears to have martial arts skill. Ran, despite being a practiced and acclaimed martial artist, claims no one has a better round house kick than Shinichi. He was able to skillfully dodge a kicking assault from an angry Ran, something very few have ever been able to do. Shinichi is also extremely fast and agile. Demonstrating parkour and free-running feats, he has been seen able to scale vertical faces as well as maneuver through narrow and cluttered areas with great efficiency.

Plot overview

Because the main plot revolves around the fact that Shinichi has become 'Conan' and is forced into hiding, Shinichi himself appears rarely in the series. However, Conan is frequently shown calling Ran using his voice-changing bow tie to sound like Shinichi and sent/receive text messages from her under "Shinichi's" phone. In these instances, it can be said that the character of Shinichi, albeit in the body of Conan, is appearing, since these phone conversations and text messages allow Shinichi to be himself, however briefly.

Transformations back into Shinichi

Roller coaster murder case

Shinichi appears to correct Hattori's deduction

Shinichi started as himself in the Roller coaster murder case, but by the end he had been transformed into Conan, thus beginning the series' plot. Since then, Conan has temporarily turned back to Shinichi several times.

East versus West Detective

Shinichi's next real appearance after shrinking is in Volume 10, when a strange detective from Osaka named Heiji Hattori arrived at Mouri Detective Agency looking for Shinichi in order to determine which of them was the better detective. A strange combination of having a cold and drinking baijiu that Heiji had brought along allowed Conan to briefly grow into Shinichi once again.

Desperate Revival

In Volume 26, Conan was able to become Shinichi using an Antidote (prototype) that Ai Haibara synthesized. As himself, he tried to surprise Ran by disguising himself as a character in her play, but was interrupted by a murder case and ended up revealing himself to his entire high school. Heiji Hattori covered for him and Shinichi was able to spend about 48 hours as himself, albeit with a brief collapse about halfway through, and turned back into Conan just as he seemed to be about to confess his feelings to Ran.

Shiragami case

Shinichi's next appearance was not until Volume 62, when, while on a case with Heiji, Conan went missing and 'Shinichi' seemed to appear. The 'Shinichi' is actually someone who had gotten plastic surgery to look like Shinichi Kudo, and was actually trying to blame Kudo for a murder. The real Shinichi had been hiding in the forest until he could clear his name. It was revealed he had been temporarily restored by another of Haibara's prototypes, but his time on accident; Agasa mistakenly gave them to Shinichi thinking they were cold medicine. However, after the case was solved, Shinichi transformed back to Conan, but luckily, Haibara secretly followed him there and give him another antidote, saving him from revealing his identity to Kogoro, Ran and Kazuha. While driving home from the case, the group was stopped by another murder which Shinichi and Heiji investigated together, despite increasing pangs that warned of his imminent reversion to Conan. After the case was resolved, Ran tried to stop Shinichi from leaving, saying she had something to tell him. Shinichi stopped her, saying "According to my deductions, what you have to say and what I have to say are the same thing." Ran seized his hand while he was transforming back into Conan, and though Haibara knocked her out with Conan's wristwatch, she refused to let go of his hand. Haibara and Professor Agasa had to cut and re-pin Conan's shirt onto him because Ran was still clutching his hand.

London

In Volume 71, Conan, Ran, and Kogoro were invited to England by a rich elite British woman, Diana Kingstone, after Kogoro had found a cat under the table in Poirot Cafe, and it was revealed to be Diana's. However, since 'Conan Edogawa' doesn't have the proper credentials to fly internationally, Ai gave him a prototype pill so that Shinichi and Agasa could fly low-profile to England on the same plane that Ran and Kogoro were flying. Ai gave him a second prototype pill for the return journey, but Conan used it while Ran was pursuing him. They came as close as they ever have to openly confessing their feelings for each other; Shinichi told Ran he loved her, but Shinichi soon fled to become Conan again. For the return trip to Japan, it was revealed that Ai had expected him to use his second pill, and had brought extras which allowed him to return to Japan.

Flashback Appearances

Shinichi has appeared in several flashbacks.

Shinichi's first case

One year ago, Shinichi solved his first case by himself on a plane flying to New York City. The second half of this trip is retold in the next flashback.

New York City

One year ago, Shinichi had gone to New York City with Ran to meet up with his mother and see a play called the Golden Apple in Volume 35. There, they met Vermouth and Shuichi Akai for the first time.

Challenge from the original Kaitou Kid

In Volume 55, a flashback revealed that first-graders Shinichi and Ran had been given a riddle by the original Kaitou Kid, Toichi Kuroba.

Non-Canonical Appearances

Movie 7

In Movie 7, Heiji was injured and Kazuha kidnapped; her abductors threatened to kill her unless Heiji showed up for her. Believing Heiji to be unable to do so, Conan contacted Ai and asked if there was any way for him to briefly become Heiji. Ai gave him medicine to simulate the effects of a cold, then he drank some Baijiu which had changed him in his and Heiji's first manga appearance. Conan became Shinichi for approximately an hour, but according to Ai he was extremely weak and sick for the entire time.

OVA 9

In OVA 9, Conan takes another prototype antidote. However, it proves less effective than the prototype she used during the Desperate Revival arc; Conan became Shinichi, but only for a few hours, and remained in a feverish state, unable to wake up until he had reverted back to Conan. During his time unconscious, he had a vivid hallucination that he had grown to age 17 again as Conan and that Ran, aged 27, was about to marry Tomoaki Araide.

Relationships analysis

Since Shinichi is not featured as prominently as Conan throughout the series, only a few of his relationships with other characters have been substantially explored.

Family & Friends

Shinichi and Ran

Ran Mouri

Ran Mouri is Shinichi's childhood friend and canonical love interest. They have been friends and playmates since kindergarten, though Shinichi's tendency to drag Ran along into minor trouble caused some censure from her mother. Shinichi has liked Ran since at least the first year of middle school, and turned down any other potential love interests as a result, but she has never realized this. Shinichi was similarly oblivious to Ran's regard until Ran confessed to Conan that despite his faults, which she is well aware of, she has liked Shinichi for some time. Shinichi has since confessed his feelings to Ran in the non-canon 4th movie 'Captured In Her Eyes' (which Ran mistook as his attempt to get her memories back), and made attempts to say something during temporary cures in the manga and anime, but cases always seem to interfere until the cure runs out. Shinichi since then has finally canonically confessed to Ran in the case in London.

Shinichi somewhat and somehow confesses his feelings for Ran to her under the Big Ben in London, during the Holmes' Revelation Arc.

Shinichi's initial disappearance troubled Ran to the point of insomnia and nearly going to the police. Since then, Shinichi sometimes calls Ran over the telephone and imitates his normal voice with the voice-changing bowtie so that she doesn't worry about him. He convinces her that he is off solving a very difficult case and will return once the investigation concludes. In reality, he is the brain behind her father's rapid rise to fame as a detective.
Shinichi/Conan is not without sexual fantasies regarding Ran, the most obvious evidence being his nosebleeds or blushing when he sees her in a bathing suit, or when Ran pulled him into an onsen with her. For her part, Ran often blushes when thinking of Shinichi, especially when Sonoko teases her about their relationship. Her attitude towards Conan is one of more open, sisterly affection, such as giving him hugs or holding his hand. Shinichi has some concerns of bodily harm should Ran realize that not only has he been lying to her, but they've shared a bed and taken a bath together.
Shinichi and Ran appear to share a close empathic link due to their strong feelings for each other, making each of them feel the other's worry and agitation in times of extreme danger.

Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo

Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo are both aware that Conan is in fact Shinichi. His parents are even more famous than he is, with Yusaku being a famous mystery novelist and Yukiko being a retired actress. They currently live in the United States and travel extensively, having left Shinichi in Japan on his own when he was fourteen. Though he sometimes finds his parents' carefree ways to be annoying, he loves them dearly. Yusaku is also a detective with the same keen eye for details, and similarly to Holmes' brother Mycroft, Yusaku always seems to solve a case one step ahead of his son.

Hiroshi Agasa

Although not related by blood, there's a strong family-like bond between Shinichi and Hiroshi Agasa. Agasa was the first to know about Shinichi's shrinking predicament and was the one to tell him to keep it a secret. Most of the gadgets that Shinichi has were made by Agasa to help Shinichi catch the criminals and solve the cases as Conan. He also knows about Shinichi's romantic relationship with Ran and sometimes teases him about it in front of her (when Shinichi can't do anything about it since he is Conan).

Heiji Hattori

Heiji is often referred to as Shinichi's detective rival from the West. Even though Heiji discovers Shinichi's secret, he decides to keep quiet (though he often slips up and calls him Kudo in front of others). After Heiji realizes the truth, they become close friends with a common interest in solving mysteries. They have solved many cases together, and Heiji is the person Shinichi turns to for advice or for confirmation regarding a deduction.

Detective Boys

So far, Shinichi did not canonically meet the detective boys before becoming Conan. In the non-canonical animated special, OVA Magic File 2, four years prior to him becoming Conan, a thirteen-year-old Shinichi came across the Detective Boys, Genta, Mitsuhiko, and Ayumi, while they were still three years old. He needed their help in confirming a client's alibi. Also, in the first live action drama and the first episode of the anime, the Detective Boys are seen sneaking into Tropical Land for treasure. Ran then says, pointing to the children, "It was like that last time, huh?" to Shinichi.

Ai Haibara

Ai Haibara, a defector from the Black Organization who was shrunk with the same poison as Shinichi, is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it. Indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as Conan's mother and Gin, have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. they're both victims of the APTX 4869), she finds it easier to talk to him.

Law enforcement

Juzo Megure

Inspector Megure has worked together with Shinichi to solve many cases. During Shinichi's first case on the plane to New York, Megure seemed irritated that Shinichi was poking his nose into a murder case. Since then because Shinichi has proven himself solving cases one after the other, Megure has grown to respect Shinichi and his deductive abilities, thanking him for his assistance.

Others

Kaitou Kid

Despite the fact Toichi and Shinichi only met once prior to Toichi's death, it's worth mentioning Toichi referred to Shinichi as his "older brother" and himself as the "younger brother". This is because of Yusaku, Shinichi's father, created and thus was the father of the moniker Kaitou Kid, Toichi's secret identity. Toichi's son and successor, Kaito, has also only crossed paths with Shinichi as Shinichi once, during the Clocktower heist. Kaito thought Shinichi made the heist harder (and thus less boring) in Saguru Hakuba's absence, and Shinichi found Kid's intention of 'stealing' the Clocktower in order to save it from demolition to be fairly admirable.
In their next encounter, however, after Shinichi had become Conan, Kid disguised himself as Ran in order to steal the Suzuki Black Star pearl. When Conan cornered him on the Suzuki cruise ship, Kid suggested that he'd stolen all of Ran's clothes to impersonate her, and left her naked on the deck. While this ended up being a bluff, Conan was shocked and infuriated. In subsequent encounters between Kid and Conan, Conan displays a much more intense desire to capture Kid. In several instances he appears to be able to 'sense' Kid's presence; knowing Kid is close by often causes Conan to behave far more frenetically. However, in several instances, beginning with the "Big Adventure in the Eccentric Residence" case, when Kid does Conan/Shinichi a favor, such as saving Genta's life in the aforementioned case, Conan reciprocates by halting his investigation just shy of capturing Kid, thereby allowing him to escape unhindered.

People who know Conan's real identity

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity and none have betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are Hiroshi Agasa, Conan's parents, Heiji Hattori and Ai Haibara. Vermouth also knows, but she has kept it a secret from the rest of the Organization to protect Shinichi because he had saved her life in New York. Eisuke Hondou, the younger brother of C.I.A. agent Hidemi Hondou, also knows and keeps Conan's secret. Kaitou Kid also knows Conan's identity in the movies, though it is not clear whether he knows Conan's secret in the actual anime and manga. However, Kid seems to know there is something unusual about Conan, as whenever he tries to publicly steal he usually reveals that he only wants to compete with Conan as thief and detective. Ran gets suspicious on occasion, but so far Conan has managed to trick her into thinking Conan and Shinichi are two different people.

Conan Edogawa

Conan Edogawa (Edogawa Konan) is the alias used by Shinichi Kudo in his shrunken form. Shinichi took the appearance of his six year old self after being exposed to a prototype poison called APTX 4869 which he had been forced to swallow by two men in black later revealed to be members of the Black Organization. The poison deaged Shinichi's entire body except for his nervous system and therefore he still has the personality, memories, and incredible deductive ability of his teenage self. Conan's goal is to hunt down the Black Organization in the hope of finding an antidote to the APTX 4869. To do so he plans to make the washout detective Kogoro Mouri famous in hopes of attracting a case related to the Black Organization.
Conan is often treated as a separate character from Shinichi by fans, and often viewed as the main character of the series while Shinichi is viewed as a recurring character. He has become a popular figure in Japan and even appeared at numerous occasions in different anime series (i.e. mainly cameo appearances) as well as other medias.

Background

Conan Edogawa is Shinichi Kudo's alter ego. He did not exist prior to the chain of events, involving members of the Black Organization, that led Shinichi to transform back into a child.

The Transformation

Shinichi being drugged.

At the beginning of the series, Shinichi brings his friend Ran Mouri to Tropical Land, a local theme park, to celebrate her victory in the Metropolitan Karate Championships. He later ends up solving a murder case there. As they are leaving, Shinichi witnesses a suspicious exchange between an unknown business man and a man in black in a secluded area by the ferris wheel. While spying on the suspicious men, Shinichi does not notice another man in black, who knocks him out from behind and forces him to swallow a new experimental poison known as APTX 4869. They then leave him to die. However, instead of killing Shinichi, a rare side-effect occurred. Shinichi's body shrunk back to that of his six-year-old self. In desperation and confusion, Shinichi heads back to his house and runs into his next door neighbor and close family friend, Professor Agasa. After a few attempts at proving he's in fact Shinichi, he finally succeeds in convincing the Professor. The latter warns him he must keep his identity secret as the Black Organization will surely try to kill him and others associated with him should they learn the truth.

Taking a new identity

Shinichi comes up with the alias Conan Edogawa using the mystery author names Arthur Conan Doyle and Edogawa Rampo and pretends to be a distant relative of Agasa's who then places Conan in Ran's care. Ran's father, Kogoro Mouri, owns a Detective Agency which may provide a chance for Conan to run into a case involving the Black Organization, however Kogoro is a terrible detective with little credibility. Using helpful gadgets that Agasa made, Conan sets out to improve Kogoro's detective reputation by solving cases for him while also hiding the truth that Conan is really the one solving cases. By knocking Kogoro out at crime scenes with a fast-acting tranquilizer and using a voice modulator to relay deductions in Kogoro's voice, Conan creates 'Sleeping Kogoro'. The conceited Kogoro enjoys his newfound reputation and the money it brings in so much that he doesn't question why he is suddenly passing out at crime scenes and solving cases in his sleep.

Creation of the Detective Boys
Conan enrolls at Teitan Elementary to further protect his identity and makes friends with classmates Ayumi Yoshida, Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, and Genta Kojima, who create the Detective Boys not long after.

Conan stuns Kogoro with his wristwatch, ready to solve a case!

Solving cases

As Conan, Shinichi helps Ran's father solve cases by putting him to sleep and simulating Kogoro's voice using the special bowtie gadget Professor Agasa made for him. He also spends a good amount of time with his Detective Boys fellows and solves many small cases with them and sometimes in the company of Professor Agasa. In some situations, when there's only Ran, Sonoko, and himself, he will use Sonoko instead to solve the case at hand. Because of that, Sonoko eventually becomes another rather well-known "sleeping" detective although her reputation is only known to the local police investigation team and Sonoko's friends. In much later files, Conan has solved the case as himself then claimed afterwards that "Shinichi-niichan told him it".

Personality

As Conan, Shinichi tries to behave like a child. He refers to Ran as "Ran-neechan" (nee-chan meaning older sister, a common nickname Japanese children give to teenagers and young adults they look up to), and refers to Shinichi as "Shinichi-niichan" (nii-chan meaning older brother). He also refers to Kogoro as "Oji-san" or "Occhan" (both meaning Uncle), although he also does this as Shinichi. As Shinichi, he refers to Conan as usually "Conan-kun" or the "Kid in the Glasses". Shinichi treats Conan as a separate person completely, thinking for example, "changing back into Conan".

Ran telling Conan she likes Shinichi.

Conan remains very close to Ran, who in return is very protective of him. However, because Ran is unaware of his true identity, Conan often finds himself in awkward situations with her, such as when she confessed her feeling for Shinichi to him and when she made him bathe with her at a hot spring.
Conan tried to speak in a child-like tone of voice when dealing with adults, but he often gets caught up in the current case and begins speaking like an adult, referring to advanced topics and using reasoning much too complex for a normal child. When this happens, he often tries to pass it off as "something [he] heard on TV".

Conan whispers to Chiba and Tome.

Likewise, he makes no effort to hide his love for Sherlock Holmes and soccer, so if he called out for talking about either subject in too much detail, he tries to escape suspicion by saying it was something Shinichi told him about. Although as the series has progressed the adults around him have become more used to his "being quite smart for a child", causing him to behave more like himself around them, he still tries to pass as a normal child. The only police officers with whom Conan can speak in a professional manner are the FBI, especially Jodie Starling, Shuichi Akai, James Black, and Inspector Kansuke Yamato of the Nagano Police, all of whom suspect that there is more to Conan than meets the eye. Conan's intelligence remains intact even though he is shrunk to a child. As Shinichi, his deductive ability earned him the monikers "Heisei Holmes" and "Savior of the Japanese police force". Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases and escape tricky situations.
Conan tends to act more like himself around the Detective Boys, even to the point that they find it odd when he acts like a child around adults. He will often play games like baseball with the Detective Boys, but he is too used to soccer to perform well and will even instinctively use soccer techniques, such as kicking in games that do not call for it. Because he is unfamiliar with popular games and TV shows, Genta and the others tend to think of him as dumb. This annoys Conan so much that he will secretly watch TV in the living room after Kogoro and Ran go to sleep to get more "practice" in.

Appearance

Conan wearing a white version of his voice-changing bow tie. In episode 505-506, and 520

Conan has dark brown hair which mostly hangs downwards just above his blue eyes, but there are also a few strands that stick up at the front and back of his head. Conan's usual outfit consists of a blue suit jacket with a single button and a pair of shorts, red trainers and white socks, even though he has taken to wearing more casual clothing as time goes on. He also wears a red bowtie and his dad's old glasses. Both these items were later specifically modified by Professor Agasa to include a voice changer, microphone, and homing device, to aid in Conan in his cases. His red runners have also been modified to harness electric and magnetic fields to stimulate pressure points on Conan's foot, greatly enhancing his kicking power.

Skills

Detective skills

All of Shinichi's detective skills carry over to his Conan form, although Conan does not the have the reputation Shinichi had. He has a keen eye for details, and can spot any "strange points", in a case that most people tend to ignore or not take into account. This comes from his photographic memory, of being able to remember every abstract of an investigation. Conan's fastidious attention to detail allows him to notice minor inconsistencies in crime scenes and suspect testimony, and using astute logic he uncovers the reasons behind those inconsistencies in order to link them to the crime. Conan has extraordinarily broad knowledge of many subjects and trivia that help him solve cases; something he likely acquired from his incessant reading in his "first childhood".
As a child, Conan can attract less suspicion while investigating crime scenes, get away with searching people's personal property, and ask innocent questions without setting suspects on guard, although it comes with the drawback of not having Shinichi's authority or reputation.

Athletic ability

Conan is just as skilled as Shinichi in soccer, but a lot less powerful because he only has the strength of a young child. To make up for this, Conan uses Agasa's Power-enhancing kick shoes. Conan uses signature, powerful precision kick to knockout criminals using soccer balls or whatever substitute is handy. Like Shinichi, Conan's kick is accurate over distances and he is capable of mentally reckoning the angle of impact necessary to rebound a soccer ball off a wall and strike an attacker from behind. He is also good at skiing and snowboarding.
Conan also has some skill with firearms despite the recoil being much more severe for a child's body. He shoots out a bus window during a bus hijacking, and precisely grazes Ran's leg to render her useless as a hostage in the second movie.
Conan's nimbleness is especially noticeable in the non-canon movies. For example, in the sixth movie, Conan is seen to fight with various antagonists, and he even holds his own against Jack the Ripper, a notorious serial killer who bests even Ran in combat. In the fourteenth movie, Conan does a back flip on his skateboard in order to avoid being killed by the blimp's hijackers. Conan shows a proclivity for skateboarding. In the movies and anime, Conan can easily perform very complicated tricks and dodges with his skateboard at high speed.

Plot overview

Initial pursuit

After Shinichi becomes Conan, he sets out to find the men in black almost immediately. At the suggestion of Agasa, he moves in with Ran and Kogoro, hoping that cases related to them come by. Pretty soon, a case involving a woman name Akemi Miyano (using the alias Masami Hirota) appears. Akemi robs a bank for the men in black in the hopes that they will free her sister from their organization. Conan is unable to realize the case's connection to the organization until after the men in black have shot Akemi and left her for dead for trying to double cross them. In her dying moments, Akemi warns Conan of the danger of the organization.
Conan runs across the men in black again on a bullet train, this time learning their codenames: Gin and Vodka.
At a game convention, Conan meets a third man in black named Tequila, only to have him killed in an explosion meant for someone else.

Introduction of Ai Haibara

As the story progresses, Conan later befriends biochemist Ai Haibara. Ai Haibara grew up within the Black Organization and is a former member of it along with her sister.
She is the creator of the APTX 4869 drug but took the drug in order to escape from the Black Organization. Conan has run into the Black Organization multiple times, but he fails in tracking them due to Gin's cleverness.

The Phone Number of 'That Person'

After solving a case in a rich household, the culprit tells the phone number for the Leader of the Black Organization is the tune to the song of "Seven Children".

Returning Back to Shinichi

The First Comeback

Throughout the series Conan has returned back to normal. First he temporary returns to normal after drinking alcohol while infected with a cold. He quickly turns back into Conan after solving the case. The next time was after taking the prototype antidote for APTX 4869.

Desperate revival

Ai invented an antidote, just a prototype, for the APTX 4896, and Conan first used it in Volume 26 to conceal his identity, preventing Ran from suspecting he is Shinichi any further. Ai disguised as Conan and appeared in front of the reverted Shinichi, cancelling out all of Ran's suspicions.

Shiragami case

The antidote prototype was again taken, this time accidentally in place of cough syrup. It wore off 24 hours later, with Ai giving him another one to protect his identity. This time it wore off in a shortened 4 hours, once again interrupting the process of confession of feelings to Ran.

London Arc

During the Holmes' Revelation arc in London, Conan took an antidote so he can go overseas, because "Conan Edogawa" does not exist in real life, and has no passport. Ran quickly deduces that Shinichi is in London as well. She asks some Londoners about a Japanese boy, and they give her directions, without specifying it was actually a six-year-old they saw. In a phone booth, Conan takes the pill originally meant for his return trip to Tokyo in order to conceal his identity from Ran. During this time, he manages to confess his feelings to her. Luckily for Conan, Ai asks Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo, his parents, to go to London and give him a 3rd pill, as she guessed he would have used his spare one for Ran.

Relationships analysis

Family & Friends

Ran holding Conan.

Ran Mouri

Although they are romantic interests as Shinichi and Ran, Conan and Ran share a brother/sister kind of relationship. Ran plays a nurturing protective role and treats Conan like a child version of Shinichi. They do a lot of activities together such as swimming, going to the movies or festivals, and more. Ran and Conan both look out for each other's wellbeing. Ran stands up for Conan during Kogoro's outbursts and destroys any criminals seeking to inflict harm on Conan with her karate. Conan lends an ear and advice when Ran is in an difficult situation or needs to vent, and he comforts and encourages her when she is feeling down, especially about Shinichi being away for so long. It is even likely that Ran unconsciously knows that Conan actually is Shinichi, even though she seems reluctant to follow that notion.

Kogoro noticed Conan in the car.

Kogoro Mouri

Kogoro and Conan most often see each other as nuisances. Conan dislikes Kogoro's usually poor detective ability and case handling, slovenly personal habits, and overinflated ego. Kogoro's deduction doesn't seem to improve so Conan almost always needs to knock Kogoro out when he starts spouting off incorrect theories. Although in most cases Conan merely sees Mouri as a drunk idiot, he often is impressed when Kogoro gets serious and actually gets the case right, so he will allow the "non-sleeping Kogoro" to take the spotlight. Kogoro views Conan as a freeloader who constantly gets underfoot and never fails to insinuate himself at cases, "interfere" with the scene, and pipe up with childish observations that consistently ruin Kogoro's deductions.

Yusaku and Yukiko Kudo

Conan's parents, Yusaku and Yukiko, like to push their child towards becoming an even better detective. They enjoy giving out challenges and sometimes without letting Conan know who's giving them: they disguised once to simulate a case and force Conan to discover their identities by his own means.
Yukiko loves to meddle in Conan's (and Shinichi's) love life as she will often make allusions such as Ran being her possible future daughter-in-law or Ai and Ayumi having feelings for Conan. He doesn't usually pay much attention to them. Once she has mentioned that Ai has romantic feelings for him because she looked at him ten times, saying that the only time a girl would do that is if she likes the boy or the boy has something on his face. Conan simply pushes it off as Ai checking on her "lab mouse," but at night, in bed, Conan asks Ai if he has something on his face.
Conan's mother helped him out once to keep his secret identity from being exposed to Ran by creating an alibi for him.

Hiroshi Agasa

Conan investigates with Agasa.

Conan treats Agasa as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help. Agasa's willingness to help whenever possible makes Shinichi's life as Conan more convenient. He was the one who created most of Conan's gadgets, including his power shoes and tracking glasses. He willingly plays Conan's case solving mouthpiece when Conan lacks someone else convenient to use. When Conan needs something, like info from past cases for example, he usually asks Agasa to get it. Agasa often acts as a chauffeur because he is trustworthy and the only adult with a car regularly available.
Agasa often worries about Shinichi, especially when he thinks Shinichi might be going over his head. Agasa almost always responds positively to Shinichi's requests, but doesn't like it when Shinichi hides the reasons for it, especially if it is dangerous.

Heiji Hattori

Heiji teasing Conan.

When they first meet, Conan and Heiji seem bound to become lifelong rivals even after Kudo bests Heiji in their first case. However, after discovering Conan's real identity, Heiji starts to act like an older brother towards him much to the annoyance of Conan. Since then, the two have become rather close friends, and consult one another on cases, developments concerning the Black Organization, and even their "girlfriends". They tend to stick together on cases, although sometimes this is because Heiji forces the less enthusiastic Conan to come along. While fond of Heiji as a fellow detective he can relate to, Conan finds Heiji's antics more of an annoyance than anything. Much to Conan's chagrin, Heiji even convinces others that Conan is his disciple. Conan especially dislikes Heiji's dangerous habit of calling Conan 'Kudo' when others are present.
Heiji hasn't seemed to have gotten over the former rivalry as well as Kudo has, so he hates being to compared to Shinichi. Heiji gets especially annoyed if anyone claims Shinichi is better (or even equal), and will often go to great lengths to show "west" (Osaka) is better than "east" (Tokyo). Shinichi usually starts off acting like he is disinterested in the frivolous competition, but may then become competitive himself if Heiji starts "winning" or someone bruises his ego. Others, like Ran and Kazuha, see them both as equally skilled detectives.

Detective Boys

Conan and Haibara investigating

Ai Haibara

Ai Haibara is the third girl that seems to have somewhat romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits it; indeed, it is a mystery just exactly what she feels for him, whether friendship or otherwise. Some people, such as Conan's mother and Gin, have stated that she has feelings for Conan. It could be said that, because of their almost equal level of intelligence as well as similarities in their pasts (i.e. both victims of the APTX 4869), she finds it easier to talk to him.

Ayumi Yoshida

Conan grows to respect the little girl in his class for her sharp wit and observational skills, along with the other members of the Detective Boys. Ayumi in turn clearly seems to like Conan and isn't aware that the other two Detective Boys are jealous of him because of this.

Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya and Genta Kojima

Mitsuhiko sees Conan as a model, someone he looks up to. Genta, and more so Mitsuhiko, are often impressed by Conan's vast knowledge and incredible deduction skills. However, they both become quite jealous of Conan whenever Ayumi shows gestures of affection towards him (usually a small kiss on the cheek).

Law enforcement

Police

With the exception of a few inspectors, most listen to the little clues that Conan points out. After a while, Conan gets the attention of the whole Tokyo police department for noticing things even pros miss. Wataru Takagi in particular has taken to trusting Conan completely and doing whatever Conan asks him to without hesitation.

FBI

The FBI is one of the few minority that Conan acts normally around. Conan seems to place trust in the FBI, and occasionally helps in their operations.

Jodie Starling

Jodie nicknamed Conan, "Cool Kid" and Conan (despite being wary when he first met her) now places complete trust in Jodie. Jodie has also called Conan, informing of a new Black Organization member, Bourbon.

Shuichi Akai

Akai has been shown to respect Conan's detective skills. It may not take long before Akai figures out Conan and Shinichi are one and the same. Conan once says to Akai, "I'm glad you're an ally."

Black Organization

Gin and Vodka

Even though Gin and Vodka do not yet know who's stopping their operations, Gin has been shown to be curious who "that guy" is, "that guy" being Conan. Gin has tried to catch a glimpse of Conan's face in a helicopter in the movie, The Raven Chaser, but failed after Conan successfully downed the helicopter. Conan seems to have a very bitter hatred towards them, and this only increases as more people are targeted by the Black Organization.

Vermouth

Vermouth seems to have great personal interest in Conan, constantly calling him as the Black Organization's 'Silver Bullet'. She also protects Conan probably because when she was disguising as a serial killer in New York, she was saved by Conan (Shinichi at the time) and Ran. Conan does not, however, seems to react strongly when she is mentioned. He also seems to consider her less of a threat than the other members because he was able to bargain with her about Haibara and knows Vermouth is keeping his secret for personal reasons.

Bourbon

Tooru Amuro (codenamed Bourbon) has recently begun associating with the Mouri Detective Agency as Mouri's "apprentice". Conan initially treated him in a somewhat friendly manner, even thinking that "another annoying person's showed up" when he learned Amuro would be joining Mouri on cases. After learning of Amuro's membership in the Black Organization, though, Conan has been relatively nervous about him being near Ran. He's become more cautious and is somewhat confused by Amuro's helpful behavior, though he attempts to pretend nothing has changed.

Others

Kaitou Kid

Before being shrunk, Shinichi had encountered Kaitou Kid once during the Clock Tower heist, though they did not meet face-to-face.
In the movies, it is implied that Kid knows Conan's identity; he even helps Conan maintain his cover by disguising himself as Shinichi so that a suspicious Ran would stop suspecting Conan. However, this has not been confirmed by Gosho Aoyama, nor has it been implied in the manga.

People who know Conan's real identity

There are only a few characters in the series who know Conan's real identity. None of them have ever betrayed Conan's identity to date. The main characters to know the secret are Hiroshi Agasa, Yusaku Kudo, Yukiko Kudo, Heiji Hattori, and Ai Haibara. Vermouth of the Black Organization also knows about Conan's secret. Later in Episode 508 of the anime, Eisuke Hondou confirms Conan's identity as Shinichi Kudo straight from him.
The 3rd, 8th, and 14th movies also demonstrate that Kaitou Kid apparently knows Conan's identity and acts to protect it. However, this has yet to be backed up by the original artist, Gosho Aoyama, in the manga or (as would follow) the anime main series.

Gadgets

Professor Agasa has made many gadgets for Conan. The first one being is his wristwatch stun gun. He uses about every cases to knock out the great sleeping sleuth Kogoro Mouri, on about every cases they encounter, he has to be knocked out because, his deductions are just sometimes too insane. The second gadget would have to be his voice changing bow tie. With this gadget, Conan can alter his voice from high to low, or child to adult. This gadget has proven its self to be a great assistance to Conan because, when he knocks out his target he uses this to mimic their voice. Professor Agasa had made the next gadget to look like normal tennis shoes but with the turn of a dial, they strengthen Conan's feet allowing him to kick objects in order to knockout or stun the criminal. Along with the shoes, Professor Agasa made Conan a ball dispensing belt, which when pressing a button a fully inflated soccer ball appears. The tracker glasses are a special type of glasses made with bullet proof glass (as seen in the Movie 3: The Last Wizard of the Century). Another handy feature is that when pressing a button allow you to enhance a certain image zooming in on it, this has been found to be very useful to Conan because with this he can track down all of the Detective Badges. The Detective Boys Badges are the badges that allow the Detective Boys to communicate each other with built in radios in their badges. Professor Agasa made special watches just for the Detective Boys that has a built in light. Another gadget is his solar powered skateboard or snowboard that collects power from the sun and then at night, runs for 30 minutes. His last gadget is his handy dandy super stretch suspenders, which he uses to rescue Ran in Movie 2: The Fourteenth Target.

Background

First Grade Ran meets Fusae Campbell ten years ago and borrows her umbrella

Ran is a childhood friend of Shinichi Kudo. She is the daughter of Kogoro Mouri, a private detective, and Eri Kisaki, a lawyer. Her parents got separated when she was seven, and one of her biggest goals is to get them back together. Her best friend next to Shinichi is her classmate Sonoko, who constantly teases her about her relationship with Shinichi.
One year before the series' start, Ran and Shinichi had gone to the United States to visit Shinichi's parents in New York. They met his mother and her actress friend, Sharon Vineyard (also known as Vermouth, a member of the Black Organization). Later that evening, Vermouth disguised as a serial killer to do BO work, and was saved by Ran and Shinichi who encountered her on their way back from a show turned murder case. Vermouth had slipped and would have fallen to her death, but Ran caught her arm and Shinichi helped her pull her to safety. Due to this, Sharon gave Ran the nickname "Angel", and Shinichi the nickname "Cool Guy". Vermouth later showed hesitance to kill Ran and later Conan as well, but whether or not it was because of any emotional attachment is unclear.
After Shinichi's disappearance, Ran met Conan Edogawa, who was introduced by Professor Agasa as a "distant relative" and asked Ran if she wouldn't mind taking care of him at her house. She and her father practically adopted him; Ran immediately came to think of him as a surrogate little brother. Little did (and still does) Ran always suspects that Conan is Shinichi but Conan finds a way to trick her.

Personality

Ran's greatest personality trait is that she genuinely cares for those she loves. She is also patient, kind, and nurturing. Like Shinichi, she highly values justice to the point of idealism. To avoid making Shinichi choose between her and his important case (really an excuse because Shinichi has turned into Conan and can't return), she has decided to wait for him to finish it, trusting his promise that he will come back despite their separation causing Ran a lot of emotional pain. Ran is also very hot-blooded and tends to act on impulses when the people she cares about are involved; the combination of jumping to conclusions and not hesitating to use karate on those who she perceives to have wronged someone have led to several "near-miss" misunderstandings. Early on, she would become violently suspicious if she thought Shinichi was philandering although more recently his confessions have lead her to trust his intentions. Even though Ran is in love with Shinichi, she often fails to convey her feelings because she suddenly becomes self conscious.
She can be very brave and resourceful when she wants to be, and rescues Conan from trouble on occasion. However, she has an irrational fear of the supernatural and is thus - unlike her friend Sonoko - absolutely no fan of anything related to the horror genre. She also constantly tries to reunite her father and mother again - though with little success, thanks to the mutual stubbornness of both parents. Men also tend to pay her a lot of undue romantic attention, a fact that makes Sonoko somewhat jealous (and of which Ran herself is completely unaware).
Ran is very self sufficient for her age. This is because her father is drunk, slovenly, and fiscally irresponsible. She handles many of the Mouri household's financial affairs and all the cooking and housework. She also ensures Kogoro doesn't slack off on his job, is on his best behavior for client meetings, and she often greets and provides refreshments for potential clients.
She appreciates fine art. Ran is noted by both Shinichi and Shuichi Akai to cry a lot. This claim has been attributed to the manga file called "Ran's Tears".

Abilities

Ran's most notable trait is her great prowess in martial arts; she is highly skilled if not masterful in karate and is also well-trained by her father in Judo. Ran is the captain and ace of the karate team of Teitan High School. She has further demonstrated her great might as she has won many tournaments; she holds the title of Regional Champion for her age group. Her deceptive strength and skill have been seen repeatedly, both from her ability to effortlessly smash stone and other very sturdy objects and also take out possible assailants. In the ninth movie, Strategy Above the Depths, Conan states that Ran has an unusual amount of stamina.
Despite her prowess, she may not always be able to use; whether it's because she is too scared or just because she is just too weakened. In the fourth movie (Captured in Her Eyes), Ran also was unable to use karate due to suffering of amnesia at the time, but as soon as she recovered her memories she also got the use of her abilities back and incapacitated the culprit who was about to kill her and Conan.
She is also very skilled in all forms of house chores, including sewing and cooking (unlike her mother), and can also play the piano well. She also is astonishingly lucky at gambling, lotteries, and any game of chance; having never been known to lose once.

Plot overview

Doubts about Conan's identity

In time, Ran comes to suspect that Conan is actually Shinichi despite what her common sense would say, but he always manages to trick her and prove her wrong. There are, however, occasions where she appears to be sure that Shinichi and Conan are one and the same.
The first time Ran suspects Conan is episode 7. After seeing how Conan, like Shinichi, can deduce someone's occupation by just touching the person's hand, Ran becomes very suspicious and keeps an eye on Conan during the whole case. However, Professor Agasa calls Ran with the voice changing bowtie at the end, freeing Conan of suspicion for a while.
Another time, when Ran finds Conan asleep on the sofa, she takes off his glasses and notices the striking resemblance he has to Shinichi as a child. She later confronts Conan about this resemblance, his similar powers of deduction, and even his shared lack of any musical knowledge. However, Shinichi's mother unexpectedly shows up and covers for Conan by explaining that Conan resembles Shinichi because they are distant relatives and that Conan possesses Shinichi's deductive ability because he admires Shinichi and learns from him.
Despite apologizing to Conan for doubting him, Ran does not lose her suspicions, but keeps them to herself for awhile. When Conan is critically injured and requires a blood donation, Ran donates her blood without hesitation, knowing she and Shinichi share the same rare blood type. Since this act proves Ran's suspicions are correct, with the help of Ai Haibara, Conan manages to fool Ran by allowing Shinichi to appear before her while Conan (Ai Haibara in disguise) is present.

Ran's Suspicion

Ran suspecting Conan's identity

Conan once forgets his cell phone on the couch and Ran, in the room at the time, remembers to send an email to Shinichi to let him know that she's going with her father on a case and that his presence would be most welcome as Kogoro could use the help. Right after sending the message, Conan's phone starts vibrating. Ran, quite perplexed by the perfect timing, checks his phone only to discover a new email (she hasn't seen the content yet). At that moment, Conan enters the room, and seeing his phone in Ran's hands, rushes towards it while shouting and grabs it back asking: "Did you look?". He quickly understands that Ran's email may have risen doubts about his identity. Following this event, Ran first believes that Shinichi often contacts Conan without her knowing, which would in some way explain how he always seems to help out on cases. Later on, after seeing Conan give an important clue to the investigation team without making use of his cell phone (to eventually contact Shinichi like she was suspecting), she starts to believe that Conan is actually Shinichi thinking that past occurrences of both being present at the same time was just a trick he used to fool her.
At the end of the day, Ran is able to retrieve Conan's phone. Late at night, after waiting for everybody to go to bed, she tries to get past the phone's PIN code to check whether her email is there or not. This, to her, would be undeniable proof that Conan is indeed Shinichi. After finally guessing the number equivalent of "Sherlock" to be the PIN code, she's surprised not to see her email there. She instantly tries a few times to resend another email but nothing comes up on Conan's phone. That's when Shinichi calls her complaining about the numerous emails she's been sending. Conan, then knocks at the door and claims back his phone saying that he didn't want people looking inside because of messages he received from a girl he likes. It is later showed that Conan actually exchanged his phone with Agasa's (which are both of the same model) and used his phone upstairs to call Ran, while she was experimenting with the Professor's phone, to create this whole alibi. Shinichi then tells Ran that she now knows his phone number. And Ran, pleased with the situation, clears her mind out of all suspicions she had about Conan's identity - at least, consciously.
During "The Whereabouts of the Embarrassing Charm" case we can see that Ran's suspicions are arising again. This is thanks to Heiji, openly revealed the fingerprint matching during the "Murder, Shinichi Kudo" case. Kazuha gave a likely, but not to Conan or Heiji, explanation on how Shinichi's fingerprints got onto the handcuff's piece of chain. However, for some reason Ran talked directly to Conan, which he pointed out that she is talking to the wrong person. Unconsciously she thinks she is talking to Shinichi.
In manga chapter 814, Conan and the girls solve a case similar to one Yusaku Kudo abandoned 10 years ago. While explaining the solution, Conan talks so convincingly that Ran feels a strong impression that Shinichi is the one speaking. It unnerves her to the point where she stops Conan, but he states that he's only reading Shinichi's e-mail.

Relationships analysis

Family & Friends

Shinichi Kudo

Shinichi Kudo and Ran Mouri have been friends ever since childhood. When the two first met, they were at kindergarten age, and later they were playmates. Their mothers, Eri Kisaki and Yukiko Kudo, would often set playdates for the two to play together. Shinichi and Ran have stayed close all the way through the present age, which has led to both of them feeling romantic feelings for each other. Ran recalls that she truly felt her feelings for Shinichi were true love when he rescued her from the serial killer in New York. However, when Conan appears and Shinichi 'departs for his regular cases', Ran automatically flusters herself about Shinichi's safety and well-being.

Shinichi and Ran

Shinichi, as Conan, often calls Ran, and using his bowtie, talks to Ran in his normal teenager voice, mostly to calm her when she is feeling fear about if he is hurt, or when he wants to make her feel better because she feels lonely without him. As Conan, Shinichi has grown closer to Ran. Ran is shown throughout to be dedicated to Shinichi, and will always love him no matter where he is. Shinichi himself also has strong feelings for Ran, and is in love with her. He is very protective of her when there are other guys with her, and he keeps her away from any other man.
Ran and Shinichi have shared many precious romantic moments, such as when Shinichi bought Ran a pair of red gloves for Christmas, or when he pretended that as Shinichi, he ate her Valentine's Day chocolate that she had made for him, while she was asleep. Shinichi is deeply saddened knowing that Ran is waiting for him to return, and that he himself cannot do anything about it. Although various characters, including Heiji Hattori, have told him to just admit everything to her, for the sake of her heart, he realizes he cannot tell her, because he does not want to put her in danger from the Black Organization, as he considers her life more important than his. People also look at them as a couple by how they act and how they talk about each other. When asked to Ran though, she blushes and usually denies a relationship between them (this causes him/Conan to blush slightly but never really says anything about it), though Shinichi finally confessed to her in London during the Holmes Revelation Arc. After that, Sonoko teased her because she did not say anything in return. Sonoko said that maybe Shinichi will transfer to another girl because Ran did not reply. Conan/Shinichi heard their conversation and said in his mind, "Like I'd ever do that."

Shinichi somewhat and somehow confesses his feelings for Ran to her under the Big Ben in London, during the Holmes' Revelation Arc.

Shinichi and Ran appear to share a close empathic link due to their strong feelings for each other, making each of them almost impossibly aware of when the other is in extreme danger, and often able to sense the other's worried thoughts.

Kogoro Mouri and Eri Kisaki

Ran remains close to both Kogoro and Eri even though they have been separated for ten years. Her constant hope is that they finally get together again, and on occasion she even plays (re-)matchmaker by arranging not-so-accidental meetings between them, though a reunion, while possible, is so far constantly hampered by mutual stubbornness and the occasional criminal incident taking place in the immediate vicinity.

Detective Boys

Ai Haibara

There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve Ran, though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that she wants to keep her identity hidden. At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, just like she was to most other people. Ran believed that it was because that Haibara had hated her. However, later that day, Haibara finally properly introduced herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends.
Haibara considers Ran a spitting image her older sister, Akemi Miyano, so she takes special interest in protecting her. These feelings began after Ran jumped through a slew of bullets from Calvados (and later Vermouth), to save Haibara and hold her down to the ground to shield her from the gunfire. Haibara immediately thinks of her own sister, and begins to treat and look at Ran as a spitting image of her. When at a later point she had learned that Korn, Chianti, and the rest of the Black Organization were lurking about, Haibara begs for Ran to stay at Agasa's house, immediately thinking of her own sister's death, and wanting to keep Ran safe.

Black Organization

Vermouth

Ran was a fan of the actress Sharon Vineyard and is currently unaware about Sharon's double-life as Chris Vineyard and Vermouth. Vermouth has a great deal of respect for Ran and protects her from the Organization's activities because Ran unknowingly saved a disguised Vermouth from falling to her death during the Golden Apple case (even though she was about to kill Ran). Vermouth's codename for Ran is "Angel".

Others

Eisuke Hondou

In The Blind Spot in the Karaoke Box, Eisuke has shown some interest in Ran. He had admitted to Conan that he loved Ran and claimed that he would take Ran to America and live happily ever after there, and thinks if he could ask for Shinichi's permission. But Conan, without hesitating, said no in a very serious expression, which the look on Conan's face revealed his true identity to Eisuke.

Background

Kogoro is a private investigator, but he prefers to laze around all day. Kogoro attended Teitan High School, the same high school as Ran Mouri and Shinichi Kudo, along with Eri Kisaki, Yukiko Fujimine, and the actress Ruri Ujo. He then graduated from Beika University, where he was the ace of the Judo team, though he was highly vulnerable to stage fright.
Some time after graduating, Kogoro became a police officer. He worked in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Division One under Inspector Megure, but he did poorly at his job. He also worked for some time under Inspector Yuminaga in the arson division as well. While Movie 2 strongly suggests that Kogoro left the police force because of the incident where he shot at Eri Kisaki who was held as a hostage, his reasons for leaving the force have not been confirmed in the manga. Kogoro is an excellent marksman.
Kogoro's daughter, Ran Mouri, is also the daughter of Eri Kisaki, who is now living separately after an argument ten years prior. Despite constantly feigning disinterest in her, Kogoro still has feelings for his wife—he has even asked her to move back in with him, but she pretends not to hear him because she is not "ready" yet, though she still has feelings for him as well. These are expressed mainly through jealousy when Kogoro's attention is caught by other attractive women in the vicinity.

Kogoro's characteristic strange expression when Conan uses the Stun-Gun Wristwatch

After Shinichi had been shrunk by an accidental effect of a mysterious poison and was forced to adopt the identity of Conan Edogawa, Hiroshi Agasa concluded that Shinichi couldn't openly continue any investigation without attracting undue attention by the Black Organization. To maintain his cover, he suggested Shinichi to move in with Kogoro and use him as a front. When Kogoro's conclusions during one of their first investigations became so dilettantish that the cause became hopeless, Conan used his soccer skills to kick an ashtray to knock him out. Kogoro unconsciously (and conveniently) adopted a reclining pose, and Conan used his Voice Changer, imitating Kogoro's voice, to present his conclusions and the identity of the true murderer; this earned Kogoro the title "Sleeping Kogoro" and the reputation as a master detective. (Later, Conan would employ his Stun-Gun Wristwatch to knock out Kogoro instead.) In the few instances where Kogoro remains awake for some reason, Conan still does the main detective work and uses Kogoro as his official mouth-piece by drawing the latter's attentions to important clues he has uncovered.

Personality

Kogoro in the morning.

Kogoro spends most of his time being dysfunctional and entirely unprofessional. Most often it is Ran, but occasionally Eri, who takes responsibility for straightening him out and reminding him who really has the power in the family.
Kogoro has an overinflated sense of his own importance and detective prowess to the point where he doesn't question why he is suddenly passing out at crime scenes and solving cases in his sleep with entirely different deductions than he was making in his waking state. Furthermore Kogoro is not diplomatic, frequently making sarcastic and blunt comments about suspects or even his own clients. Kogoro is also headstrong and irritable, but especially so when Eri is involved.
On cases, Kogoro is lax with his deductions and investigation; usually missing all but the most obvious clues. He often jumps to silly conclusions, changes his mind, and falls into whatever logical traps the culprit has prepared. The police, especially Megure, usually find him to be an embarrassment and they hope he goes into sleeping mode as soon as possible.
Kogoro does have a serious side which only emerges when the case has personal importance to him, such as when Eri and Ran are involved. When this happens, Kogoro's entire personality and demeanor changes for the serious, and he begins acting professionally, demonstrating improved deductive skills and cunning. While he is not up to the standards of Shinichi and he still has problems with finding clues, his logical reasoning becomes better, and Kogoro often demonstrates he has a better sense of interpersonal relationships than Shinichi does.

Kogoro showboating in front of Yoko Okino
.
Kogoro easily becomes infatuated with beautiful women. His dream woman is pop idol Yoko Okino, and he never misses (or tries not to miss) her television shows. He also keeps a massive collection of Yoko related goods and his office and bedroom have Yoko posters. Because of his flirtatious behavior around attractive women, he often embarrasses his daughter Ran Mouri, and while it is not the reason why his wife left him, it is the reason why she hasn't come back.
While he is never outright called an alcoholic, Kogoro has a tendency to get intoxicated at social events, and Shinichi/Conan makes sarcastic remarks about him spending money on alcohol. In the anime, his office is littered with empty beer cans, and he keeps a well-stocked liquor shelf. Kogoro is also a heavy smoker, and is usually seen with a cigarette in his mouth. His hobbies include mahjong and gambling on horse racing and keirin.
In the Japanese version, due to his name Kogoro Mouri he is often mistaken for the famous astronaut Mamoru Mohri when he introduces himself, because they both are in the news frequently, of Japanese decent, and have the same last name. In the English version when Kogoro introduces himself he is often mistaken for "oh, that famous astronaut," as well. In the English version it is possible he is also confused with Patrick Moore.
In the US version, Kogoro Mouri says that he is forty-three, in opposed to being thirty-seven in the Japanese version. It is unknown if Eri's age remains the same since they had attended school together, and if not, if it will affect the Princess Pageant storyline that occurred twenty years ago, making her in her twenties when she participated instead of a teenager.
Kogoro suffers from a mild acrophobia (fear of heights) and is quite uncomfortable in high settings, such as skyscrapers, when he has the chance to see how high up he is. It has also been made clear that Kogoro is an expert with a handgun, being able to hit targets at great distance with an impressive level of accuracy. He is also known for his Judo throw, which he often uses to incapacitate escaping suspects. As for leisure activities, unless he drinks to excess or goes hunting for any recordings of his favorite idol star, Yoko Okino, he enjoys betting on horse races, mahjong (which he tend to lose) and baseball (he even plays in his neighborhood's team).

Appearance

Kogoro is an average sized man. He has slicked back, short black hair with two loose locks hanging across his forehead and a short mustache. Ten years ago when Kogoro was still on the police force, he was clean shaven. While on cases, Kogoro usually wears a muted blue or grey suit and necktie, and just a collared shirt when being more casual. If he has been drinking heavily, he often ties his necktie around his forehead like a bandana. He seems to be reasonably fit, as he is capable of doing an Ippon seoi-nage. Kogoro is right handed. Kogoro also smokes, although over the course of Detective Conan's run he has gradually been depicted smoking less often.

Abilities

Detective skills

Throughout most of the series, Kogoro is depicted as a pretty incompetent detective, often missing obvious clues and jumping to the wrong conclusions, though several of these conclusions were shared by other people on the scene. However, Kogoro does follow the proper police procedures, asks questions, and (with a little help from Conan) follows leads quite well. Despite his ineptness, he had been a prominent police officer under Inspector Juzo Megure ten years prior to the start of the series He is shown to have left the police force after events addressed in the second movie, The Fourteenth Target.
Thanks to Conan's undercover help in solving numerous cases, Kogoro's reputation as a detective grows quickly. He hardly remembers the solutions of any cases because Conan knocks him out with tranquillizer darts so that he can announce the solution to the case while hidden, using a device that allows him to imitate Kogoro's voice as a proxy. However, Kogoro never seems to wonder about this fact and often boasts about his merits. Because of this, he has become nicknamed the Sleeping Kogoro (Nemuri no Kogorou). Jugo Yokomizo often mistakenly calls him Smoking Kogoro (Kemuri no Kogorou) because of his heavy smoking habits. Because of his (or rather, Conan's) tendency to coincidentally come across a crime scene, Inspector Megure is often referred to Kogoro as a shinigami (death god).
In later stories, there are times when Kogoro is actually able to solve crime cases without (or little) help from Conan, especially when people he knows or cares about are involved; it appears that, while he can connect the dots just fine, he can't actually find them as quickly as Conan does. The first of these events takes place during a trip to a hot spring, where one of his old college friends is murdered. Kogoro is actually so disturbed and determined to find the killer on his own that Conan cannot bring himself to drug him, limiting himself to surreptitiously drawing attention to the necessary clues.
Despite his frequent moronic analyses, Kogoro is actually pretty smart when he applies himself. He is even able to completely solve a crime on his own in the ninth movie, Strategy Above the Depths, due to the fact that the culprit Minako resembles Eri, and Conan applauds him mentally for his success. (For a more detailed list of the cases he has - more or less - solved on his own).

Judo

Kogoro was on the Judo team while he was at Beika University. Although he was the strongest on the team and can and still does toss large men with ease, he lost all the time at tournaments because he got excited and his strength was used against him. His trademark is the Ippon seoi-nage (one arm shoulder throw). He appears to also be a capable teacher in the art, having taught both Eri and Ran.

Shooting

In the non-canon Movie 2, Kogoro was an excellent shot with a handgun.

Detective Boys

The Detective Boys are called the "Junior Detective League" in the English version of the show. Notably, the Detective Boys are the only people that see the bowtie in action who aren't suspicious about Conan's identity. They have seen Conan use the bowtie, and even caught Conan using the bowtie to solve the case.

Background

Ayumi

Ayumi Yoshida is a student in Teitan Elementary when Shinichi was enlisted into her class after he had been shrunk by the drug APTX 4869. Shortly afterwards, Ayumi and her classmate Genta had the idea of investigating an apparently haunted mansion. They persuaded Conan to come along, and Genta also personally drafted Mitsuhiko when the latter expressed his criticism about supernatural hauntings.
As it turned out, the haunting served as a cover-up for an old homicide case. Following its resolution, the foursome decided to stay together and form the nucleus of what would become the Detective Boys. For a time, Ayumi was the sole female member of the Detective Boys until Ai Haibara joined the group. During a case involving a cache of stolen Italian gold coins just prior to the official formation of the Detective Boys, Conan saved the group from getting killed by the Mafioso who were also after the gold, earning Ayumi's gratitude which quickly developed into a serious crush.

Personality

Ayumi is a naive and innocent little girl who shows courage from time to time and acts as the team's cheerful spirit. She has an open crush on Conan, which makes him uncomfortable, though Ayumi thinks that he has feelings for Haibara because he tries to protect her and she often sees them talking amongst themselves in private. Ayumi later becomes better friends with Haibara, and in the Japanese version, Haibara allows Ayumi to use the more informal term Ai-"chan" to address her.
When on a case, Ayumi often makes really simple observations that allows its progress and resolution. For instance, she unlocked one of the codes from the Momotaro container the Detective Boys found in Kurashiki by deducing that it was most likely referring to one of the statues at the Oohara Art Museum: they had to walk 25 steps from the statue towards the direction it was facing.

Plot overview

Ayumi-chan Kidnapping Case (Anime: 12)

Ayumi plays hide and seek with the Detective Boys. She hides in the trunk of a parked car, not knowing that the owners would drive off with her. While in the dark, she hears the driver and passenger saying criminal things and, feeling around in the dark, finds a bundles of cash and a severed head! Conan and the other detective boys chase after the car using the skateboard. When they catch up and free Ayumi, they discover the "criminals" were really actors practicing their lines for a play and the "severed head" and "money" were only props made out of newspaper. To make up for the damage they caused, the reluctant Ayumi has to play the role of the dead girl in the play.

Relationships analysis

Detective Boys

Ayumi gives Conan her first kiss.

Conan Edogawa

Ayumi has strong romantic feelings for Conan and sees him as a role model as well as an extremely reliable person she can look up to and may always count on. Conan in turn is unnerved by Ayumi's feelings, though he does respect her as a good friend.

Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya and Genta Kojima

Ayumi gets along well with Mitsuhiko and Genta, but blissfully fails to realize that they both have a crush on her.As a result, her open flirting with Conan leaves them frequently outraged or devastated.

Ai Haibara

In her cheerful spirits, Ayumi initially also tries hard to makes friends with her new classmate, Haibara. At first Haibara remains distant, but later recognizes the value of friendship and allows Ayumi (and only her) to call her "Ai-chan". In turn, Haibara considers Ayumi like a little sister and gets along with her much better than with her other teammates.

Mitsuhiko

Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya was a student in Teitan Elementary when Shinichi was enlisted into his class after he had been shrunk by the drug APTX 4869. Shortly afterwards, his classmates Ayumi and Genta had the idea of investigating an apparently haunted mansion, and they persuaded Conan to come along. When Mitsuhiko espressed his scepticism about supernatural hauntings, Genta forcefully 'persuaded' him to tag along as well.
As it turned out, the haunting served as a cover-up for an old homicide case. Following its resolution, the foursome decided to stay together and form the nucleus of what would become the Detective Boys. It is later revealed that Mitsuhiko's parents are both teachers, and he has an older sister, Asami Tsuburaya (Tsuburaya Asami), about ten years his senior.

Plot overview

Personality

Mitsuhiko happy to have impressed Ayumi

Mitsuhiko enjoys reading science books and takes a scientific approach to problem-solving. He is a smart and well-read first-grader who believes that technology can solve most problems. Due to his strict and formal upbringing, he tends to be very formal towards his elders, addressing them (in Japanese) with the formal suffix "-san" without regard to the intimacy of their relationship.
It has been shown at numerous times that Mitsuhiko really likes to be prepared for any occasion. He enjoys studying scientific, historical and general subjects for his own interest and fun.

Mitsuhiko daydreams about marrying Ai

This eventually allows him to provide useful insights whenever necessary. He's been (or felt) rewarded a few times for his knowledge. In one instance, Ayumi said how impressed she was after Mitsuhiko provided some precise historical facts behind the Ohashi House in Kurashiki, and he thought to himself with a big happy smile on his face: "I'm so glad I studied!".
One of his other qualities is that he tends to be pro-active in many situations and think ahead of possible outcomes. For example, while the Detective Boys were trying to solve riddles they found in a Momotaro container in a small river in Kurashiki, a murder occurred which eventually led to the different codes to get burned. Conan, knowing that resolving those codes would lead to concrete proof as to who the murderer might be, was quite pleased when Mitsuhiko proudly announced that he took notes in his Detective Boys notebook "thinking that something like that could happen". With time and experience, he will probably become about as intelligent as Shinichi Kudo and Heiji Hattori.
Mitsuhiko has a dislike for carrots, and will always eat them last (if ever) if he can help it.

Relationship analysis

Detective Boys

Ayumi Yoshida

As the cheerful and innocent girl she is, Ayumi has attracted the romantic interests of her teammates Mitsuhiko and Genta, but she is blissfully unaware of that. Instead, her romantic feelings are set on Conan because of his intelligence and courage, making her view him as the person she can surely count upon. However, Conan views Ayumi as a good friend and nothing more, and her open flirting with him often incites feelings of outrage in Mitsuhiko and Genta.
According to the 5th movie, Mitsuhiko seemed to have liked Ayumi since kindergarten.

Haibara listening in on Mitsuhiko's radio.

Ai Haibara

In due time following her arrival, Mitsuhiko develops heavy romantic feelings for his classmate and fellow detective Ai Haibara. To date, Ai hasn't shown any romantic feelings for him and uses his feelings to her advantage when she needs him to do something, but she also does admire his intelligence and courage during missions the Detective Boys must perform and respects his feelings. In some episodes she even shows more confidence in Mitsuhiko than in Ayumi or Genta when the going gets tough.

Background

Genta

Genta Kojima was a student in Teitan Elementary when Shinichi was enlisted into his class after he had been shrunk by the drug APTX 4869. Shortly afterwards, he and his classmate Ayumi had the idea of investigating an apparently haunted mansion.
Genta was quick to pronounce himself the leader of the group, but his lackadaisical leadership abilities are commonly neglected in the field, and in fact everyone (even Genta) unanimously views Conan as the group's actual leader. His school shoe locker is used as a mailbox for any of their fellow students who can present them with a case.

Personality

Genta is the overweight, self-proclaimed leader of the Detective Boys. He loves food, especially braised eel on rice, and can eat more than all the other Detective Boys members combined. He also tends to mess up certain Japanese terms with similar-sounding words (especially if the latter are related to food) and is quite inept in reading even the most common Kanji, which on occasion evicts some ridicule from his classmates and friends. His brash personality, ignorance of his surroundings and tendency of not thinking before leaping often lands the Detective Boys (or at least himself) in sticky situations.
Even though he is brash, ignorant and outspoken and can be intimidating, Genta is actually very kind and dependable. He is a good friend of Ayumi and Mitsuhiko, and has been shown to admire his father, who owns a liquor store.

Background

Search team were sent to Kudo's house to investigate.

Shiho Miyano and her older sister, Akemi Miyano, alias Masami Hirota, were born into the secret crime syndicate "The Black Organization". Her English mother, Elena Miyano, and her Japanese father, Atsushi Miyano, were both scientists working for the Organization on an important secret project. While Haibara was young, both her parents died in what was claimed to be an accident. While Akemi lived a normal life, the highly intelligent Haibara was groomed to take over her parents' research. A child prodigy, she was sent to the United States for education at a very young age, and then later came back to Japan to finish her parents' secret project.. By the age of thirteen she was working as a scientist for the Black Organization. She was given the codename "Sherry", after the alcoholic drink. Shiho was about 18 years old when she developed the experimental test compound APTX 4869. She discovered that it could be used as a poison to kill without leaving any traces of itself in a body. While researching its effects, Shiho noticed that a rare few of her lab mice had become younger after being given the drug instead of dying. Meanwhile, the Black Organization started using APTX 4869 to commit untraceable murders. Unaware of the drug's rare side effect when they used it on Shinichi Kudo, the Black Organization ordered a search for him because his body had not been found. Shiho searched Shinichi's house twice after he had been shrunk to confirm his death for the Black Organization. She began to suspect Shinichi's transformation after she searched his house for a second time and found that his clothes from primary school were missing. Shiho then confirmed him as deceased so the organization would not look into the matter further and kill him after all.

Shiho swallows the APTX 4869

Shiho was unhappy that the Black Organization's was using the incomplete APTX 4869 for killing purposes -- which it was not intended for. When Shiho received word that her sister Akemi had been killed, but was given no explanation why, she decided to boycott her research until the Organization gave her an adequate explanation. Instead, the Organization confined her in a small room to await her execution. With no other way out, she took a pill of APTX 4869 to commit suicide, but instead shrunk into a six or seven year old girl. In her new smaller body, she escaped from the Black Organization and attempted to reach Shinichi's house, hoping he may be able to help her. Exhausted, she collapsed in front of Shinichi's house, where she was found by Professor Agasa, who eventually adopted her. In fact, as it turned out later, Agasa was acquaintances with her parents - especially her father, Atsushi Miyano, - even though he didn't know at that time that they had children or were part of the Black Organization.

Ai Haibara

Haibara collapsed in front of Kudo's house.

To prevent the knowledge of her transfiguration from being discovered, Shiho and Professor Agasa created her alias Ai Haibara (known as Anita Hailey - recently Vi Graythorn - in the English dub). As Ai Haibara, she attends Teitan Elementary School with Shinichi Kudo's shrunken form, Conan Edogawa. Following her first adventure with the Detective Boys in which they investigated the disappearance of a schoolmate's brother, she revealed her true identity to Conan and the fact that she had developed the APTX 4869. At first stunned, then outraged, Conan protested her presence, but as time went by, he accepted Haibara as a friend and fellow victim, though her cynicism and secretive air still rail him at times. Haibara has begun working on an antidote for the APTX 4869, but since most of the important data had been stored on computer files, which are now mostly destroyed, the work progresses slowly. Eventually, Haibara joined the ranks of the Detective Boys, and although she does not think too highly of her mates' immature antics, she has come to value them all as close friends. Eventually, Conan succeeded in persuading Vermouth, who was attempting to track down Shiho and had found out about her new identity, to leave Haibara in peace, easing the air of menace which had loomed over Haibara so far.
Vermouth broke her promise when the Black Organization member Bourbon, who had been assigned to look for Sherry, discovered a video of Shiho taken while Haibara was using a temporary antidote to rescue the detective boys. When the Black Organization attempted to kill or capture her aboard a train, a counterplan devised by Conan, Okiya Subaru, Yukiko Kudo, and Kaitou Kid resulted in an explosion that preserved Shiho's secret identity and made the all the Organization besides Vermouth believe she died.

Personality

Haibara asking for a Sai Brand's wallet for her cooperation

Shiho has a sang-froid, mistrustful, sarcastic, cold attitude, and often reminds others about the darker side of reality and human nature. As Ai Haibara, she speaks and acts older than she is supposed to be, so that the Detective Boys refer to her as "cool". But despite her jaded demeanor, she is kind and caring on occasion, though usually more to animals than people. Haibara tends to be quiet, though this may be due to her caution to keep herself hidden from the Black Organization. She considers Conan and the Detective Boys the first real friends she has ever had, and is even willing to sacrifice herself just to ensure their safety. Shiho is generally a loner and misses her older sister, Akemi, greatly (in the film Countdown to Heaven, she would call her sister's old apartment just to hear her voice on the voicemail). Her greatest fear is being caught by the Black Organization, and she is especially terrified of Gin and Vermouth. She tries to keep Conan from doing reckless things that may give away their identity, though often she is surprised by his actions which usually result in gaining the information he needs while also keeping their identities secret.
While she generally accompanies her fellow Detective Boys to soccer matches played by the Tokyo Spirits, Haibara herself is a fan of Big Osaka in general and of the player Ryusuke Higo in particular, especially since the latter has likewise abandoned a "black organization" (Noir Tokyo) which had betrayed him and had remained an outcast for a time. Because she occasionally works overnight at the antidote for the APTX 4869, she tends to be tired quite frequently, causing Conan to call her an "evil-eyed yawny girl" on one occasion.
In the OVA A Secret Order From London, Haibara reveals to Ayumi that she likes sandwiches with a mixture of peanut butter and blueberry jam, from her schooldays in America. However, since Professor Agasa caught her eating one of these sandwiches - especially since Haibara was on her part constantly pestering him into eating low-calorie foods only, she had to abandon that habit for a while.

Taste for fashion

Haibara reading fashion magazine 'Com Com'.

Haibara seems to have some interest in fashion, as she has made repeated requests for a certain type of purse when asked to do something. For instance, in one of the cases, in order to expose the identity of the person who hid the phone cables to cut off communications with the outside world, she was asked by Conan to fake an unbearable appendix pain, which she agreed to after jokingly requesting for a Fusae Brand's wallet for her cooperation. She then started rolling on the floor and screaming for help. The culprit felt like he had no choice but to reveal the cable from his pockets and reconnect the phone to ask for an ambulance. [17] She is also seen with a Prada cell phone case in the Mystery Train case. Haibara reads 'ComCom' magazine (a name similar to Japan's 'CanCam' fashion magazine) during a soccer game in the Indiscriminate Stadium Threatening Case. In OVA 11, the Detective Boys wrongly began to suspect Haibara was a child model from America, due to her looks and knowledge of fashion and makeup.

Plot overview

Introduction of Ai Haibara

Conan's class receives a new student named Ai Haibara. She acts rather cold and reserved when the Detective Boys try to befriend her, and Genta notices she's looking at Conan suspiciously. She tells them where she lives but Conan fails to realize it's at Agasa's home.
After school, a boy named Toshiya asks the Detective Boys to find his missing brother. The Detective Boys along with Haibara investigate Toshiya's house and finds a painting of Natsume Sōseki. Toshiya reveals that before his brother disappeared, a woman, who had an interest in that portrait, approached Toshiya's brother.
The Detective Boys search around town to ask whether anyone has seen the woman or Toshiya's brother. Conan notices that a man was using a counterfeit ¥1000 and realizes Toshiya's brother was actually kidnapped and forced to help create counterfeit bills. After following the man along with the clues Toshiya's brother left behind, they are able to apprehend the organized crime group and save Toshiya's brother.
On the way home, Haibara reveals to Conan that she's a former member of the Black Organization, with the code name "Sherry". She actually betrayed the group and escaped with the use of the APTX 4869 which caused her to become a child. She reveals that she accidentally sent a floppy disk containing data on the Black Organization to her older sister...which is now in the possession of her sister's professor, Masami Hirota.

Haibara cries on Conan after asking him why hadn't he helped her sister.

Agasa takes Conan and Haibara there to retrieve the disk, only to realize that Hirota has been murdered. The suspects are Hirota's three students who visited that day. Conan reveals the culprit to be a man named Akira Shirakura; Shirakura after bludgeoning Hirota to death and tied the answering machine cassette tape around the key to the room which rewound when a call was made, subsequently dragging the key into the room. As evidence, Conan reveals that Shirakura's fingerprints should be found on the tape. After seeing Conan's amazing display of logic after she had given up on the case herself, Haibara breaks down and asks Conan why he could not save her sister, Akemi, from the Black Organization. Later that day, Haibara attempts to read the files off the disk only to have a virus delete all the data.

Reunion with the Black Organization

Shiho shot by Gin.

In Episode 176-178, Conan encounters Gin and Vodka again. Haibara is kidnapped and confined to a wine cellar by the Black Orgnization member Pisco, but she escapes before Gin and Vodka arrive by drinking baijiu to turn back into an adult. Gin anticipates her actions and intercepts her on the roof. Gin shoots her repeatedly hoping he can force her to explain how she escaped from the Organization. Conan prevents Gin from killing her by shooting the man with his tranquilizer wristwatch. Conan tells Haibara to jump into the chimmey, and Vodka shoots at him, but Conan gets away. Gin purposely shoots himself in the arm to stay awake. Inside, Pisco almost kills her, but Conan rescues her after Pisco accidentally causes a fire. Gin kills Pisco for failure before he's able to tell him the truth that Shiho Miyano has deaged into a young girl. Worried that the Organization is after her, Haibara decides to leave the city. Conan anticipates that Gin will predict her next move will be to leave Tokyo, so it would be better if she remains in Beika.

Vermouth plans to kill Shiho without the Organization knowing.

Although Gin and Vodka never found out that Shiho shrank into Haibara, there was a forth member of the Black Organization who was at the party. This person, Vermouth, noticed Conan and Haibara, but did not tell her coworkers because she plans to come up with her own way of separating Haibara from Conan and the others to kill her. An expert disguise artist, she later replaces Teitan Elementary school's nurse, Tomoaki Araide to get closer to Haibara and Conan.

The Desperate Revival

Conan finds out that Ran suspects him of being Shinichi, because Ran said she knew Conan's blood type for a blood transfusion. While Conan is in the hospital contemplating admitting his identity to her, Haibara enters and points a gun at his head, saying that the Black Organization has found out about her due to an unknown agent being present at the Pisco incident. Because of this, Professor Agasa is held hostage and, in exchange for his life and a chance to return to the Black Organization, Haibara is required to terminate all the links she had as a child. However, she pulls the trigger and a bunch of flowers come out, showing that the story was just an act. Still, she uses this story as her point; that both Haibara and Conan cannot reveal their identities no matter the situation.
During that night, Haibara explains her plan to disassociate Conan from Shinichi in Ran's eyes. She has Conan take a prototype antidote for the shrinking drug and then disguises herself as Conan. For the rest of the arc, Conan returns as Shinichi while Haibara is present as Conan, thus creating the illusion of Shinichi and Conan existing at the same time, disproving that the two are the same person.
At the end of the Desperate Revival arc, the antidote begins to run out and Shinichi runs into the bathroom, where Haibara knocks him out using the sleeping needle. She then switches Shinichi into Conan's clothes after the antidote runs out.

Busjacking incident

Vermouth, disguised as Dr. Araide, boards a bus that Haibara, Agasa, and the Detective Boys are riding to a ski resort. Whatever plan Vermouth might have had was completely interrupted by the bus being hijacked by random criminals and the presence of two FBI agents that have been tracking her: Jodie Starling and Shuichi Akai. Haibara detects Vermouth's presence on the bus. She becomes so afraid that the Detective Boys, Conan, and Agasa will be killed that she decides suicide is the best option to escape.

Showdown with Vermouth

Encounter with Vermouth.
Vermouth finally launches her plan to kill Shiho. She prepares a distraction to lure Conan away so that Haibara is alone at Agasa's. Taking advantage of the fact that Haibara has literally become ill from fear, she calls as Dr. Araide to tell Haibara she is taking her to the hospital because she has been unwell for so long. The eavesdropping FBI agent Jodie Starling arrives first to protect Haibara and starts driving her towards the shipping yard where the FBI have laid a trap for Vermouth. In a complicated turn of events, Vermouth revealed she had blocked Jodie's plan and shoots her. Haibara then reveals herself to be Conan; Yukiko had helped with his disguise. Conan had sent Heiji Hattori to participate in Vermouth's distraction. The real Haibara then shows up which distracts Conan long enough for Vermouth to dart him with his own stun-gun watch. Just as Haibara is about to be killed, Ran, who had suspected Jodie of malfeasance and decided to spy on her, jumps from Jodie's car trunk and protects Haibara. Vermouth is unwilling to kill either Conan or Ran because they had saved her life in the past. Part of the reason why she originally did not tell the rest of the Black Organization about Haibara's true identity is because they would find out about Conan too and then silence him and everyone around him as well.
Before Vermouth can come up with another plan, the other FBI agent, Shuichi Akai arrives and forces Vermouth to flee with Conan as a hostage. Vermouth dials the boss of the Black Organization to lie to him about why she was injured. Conan overheard the number and threatened to give it to the police unless Vermouth promises that she will give up on trying to kill Haibara. Vermouth consents and escapes.

Pandora's box

In Episode 394, Conan figures out the boss's full number, but Haibara warns him not to call it because it is "Pandora's Box". Conan then thinks he can get Detective Takagi to figure out who the number belongs to. But then Haibara warns if he does, Detective Takagi will be killed.

FBI versus the Black Organization

Clash of Red and Black

Bourbon, Subaru Okiya, Masumi Sera, and Tooru Amuro

Not long after Akai's death, Conan hears fresh intel from the FBI that a new Black Organization agent called Bourbon is looking for Shiho, which Conan keeps secret from Haibara. As Conan and Haibara investigate a normal case, Haibara feels that an organization member is around. The organization member which she felt is implied to be one of the innocent suspects, Subaru Okiya. Conan invites Okiya to live in Kudo's house since Okiya's apartment was burnt to the ground. Okiya appears in other cases later on, including at the Haido mall where the rest of the Black Organization gathered to chase a rumored sighting of a scarred Shuichi Akai. Although Okiya is trusted by Conan and Agasa and kind to Haibara, she remains frightened of him. Later, some of his actions lead her to believe he might be someone she knows and she comes to trust him more, even attempting to uncover his identity when she thought he was asleep.
Meanwhile American high school detective Masumi Sera and detective Tooru Amuro also begin hanging around. Sera is unusually interested in Haibara and Conan; although more aggressive in scrutinizing Conan, Sera also secretly collected pictures of Haibara (which were deleted) and kept trying to meet with her after they kept coincidentally missing on another. Because of this, Haibara becomes suspicious of Sera although Sera does not give her the sort of fear the Black Organization inspires. Haibara never directly meets Amuro; the closest she gets is when he drives by her while she rides in Okiya's car during a car chase.
Later, when Haibara is forced to revert to Shiho using a temporary antidote, a video of her as an adult is sent to the Mouri Detective Agency by Mitsuhiko which Sera, Okiya, and Amuro find out about. Because of this, Haibara is later targeted by a plot concocted by Vermouth and Bourbon aboard the Bell Tree Express Train. Bourbon is revealed to be Amuro and Haibara learns that he knew her parents. Bourbon was hoping to capture Shiho alive, but Vermouth's modifications to his plan which were designed to kill her led to Shiho supposedly being blown up on the train. The Shiho Vermouth and Bourbon though was killed was really Kaitou Kid in disguise, Conan having forced him into the plan. Because of this, all of the Black Organization besides Vermouth think Shiho is now dead, and Vermouth is unable to reveal the truth to the rest of them without also compromising Conan, Haibara and their deaged condition against her wishes.

Relationships analysis

Family & Friends

Conan Edogawa

Both are de-aged by APTX and have almost equal levels of intelligence, which makes Haibara and Conan close confidants and more sympathetic to one other than most other characters. Conan is one of the few people in front of whom she has shown any signs of weakness, such as breaking down. Ai Haibara seems to have romantic feelings for Conan/Shinichi, although she never truly admits to it. Haibara expresses a lot of interest in Conan's personality, intelligence, and sense of justice. If Conan is in danger she is willing to throw away her life to save him, overriding fears and concerns for her own safety that would ordinarily paralyze her. Haibara also often enjoys teasing Conan which Conan takes in good stride. Conan is oblivious of Haibara's feelings and finds it difficult to deal with her sarcasm and impudent, cold nature. Although close on many matters, they still don't fully trust one another with information about the Black Organization out of concern for the safety and feelings of the other.

Hiroshi Agasa

The relationship between Haibara and Professor Agasa is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite their actual ages, Haibara often acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occassions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There's also been instances where she'll automatically step in front of Agasa in cases of danger.
Out of all the people she's met, Haibara seems most comfortable about acting herself with Professor Agasa; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the Black Organization, and took her in.

Ran Mouri

There are instances where Haibara will caution Conan from actions that involve Ran, though it's assumed this is due merely to the fact that she wants to keep her identity hidden. At one point, she was very cold and distant towards Ran, even more so than she was to most other people. Ran believed that it was because that Haibara had hated her, however it was because Ran reminded Haibara strongly of her dead sister. After Ran noticed Haibara was not feeling well and carried her to safety, Haibara finally properly introduced herself to Ran, and they slowly became friends.
Because Haibara finds that Ran resembles her older sister, Akemi Miyano, she takes special interest in protecting her. These feelings increased after Ran jumped through a slew of bullets from a Black Organization sniper to save Haibara. Haibara immediately thought of her own sister, and began to treat and look at Ran as a splitting image of Akemi. Haibara also begs for Ran to stay at Agasa's house, when she had learned that Korn, Chianti, and the rest of the Black Organization were lurking about, immediately thinking of her own sister's death, and wanting to keep Ran safe.

Detective Boys

Haibara has tried to keep an emotional distance away from the rest of the Detective Boys since the beginning. However, over time, she can't resist their friendliness anymore and gradually warms up to them.

Ayumi Yoshida

Out of the Detective Boys, Haibara is the closest with Ayumi. At one time, Ayumi noticed that she called everyone by their first names except for Haibara and decided to try and call her "Ai-chan", but without success. At the end of a case which involved a shattered friendship, Haibara told Ayumi that it was okay for her to call her "Ai-chan". When Mitsuhiko and Genta tried to call her that, however, she told them that only Ayumi was allowed to call her by her first name. On the whole, Haibara seems to see Ayumi as a little sister, even going so far as to physically shield her from danger.

Haibara listening in on Mitsuhiko's radio.

Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya

Haibara's classmate and fellow detective Mitsuhiko develops heavy romantic feelings for her, and Haibara is fully aware of this. Haibara uses Mitsuhiko's feelings to her advantage when she needs him to do something, but she also does admire his intelligence and courage during missions the Detective Boys must perform and respects his feelings. In some episodes she even shows more confidence in Mitsuhiko than in Ayumi or Genta when the going gets tough.

Black Organization

Gin

Gin has an abnormal attachment for Shiho and seems to enjoy hunting her, while she hates and fears him. They had some sort of relationship in the past, possibly romantic.

Vodka

Shiho and Vodka have met and are acquaintances.

Vermouth

Vermouth and Shiho have some connection, although it has not been elaborated on. Shiho fears Vermouth more than other Black Organization members except perhaps Gin. Shiho was initially Vermouth's target, but Vermouth promised to give up on her after Conan's intervention. She broke this promise later when Bourbon discovered a video of Sherry; still clinging to her personal conviction that Shiho is the one person who can't be allowed to exist in the world.

Tooru Amuro

Amuro knew Haibara's mother, so they may know each other.

People who know Haibara's real identity

These people know Haibara's true identity: Professor Agasa, Conan, Vermouth, Pisco, Heiji Hattori, Yukiko Kudo, Yusaku Kudo, and Shuichi Akai. It is also possible that James Black and Jodie Starling of the FBI know Haibara's true identity since they call Haibara by her codename "Sherry", although they may not know yet her true name.

Background

Hiroshi Agasa is an inventor and Shinichi's closest neighbor, living in a large house right next to the Kudo residence.

Agasa's house

He makes his living with a wide number of patents and inventions, mostly video games (of whom the Detective Boys are enthusiastic test players). He has been a friend of Shinichi and Ran since their childhood years. After Shinichi had been shrunk by the APTX 4869, the first person he met and entrusted himself to was Agasa. After having been convinced that the little boy was Shinichi, Agasa was also the first one to advise Shinichi to exercise caution in his pursuit of the Black Organization. He also helped Shinichi in establishing his new identity as Conan Edogawa, including constructing several gadgets which help Shinichi in carrying on his detective work surreptitiously, and in order to perfect Conan's cover, he also enlisted him into Teitan Elementary and thus came to know the children who would form the Detective Boys. When Shiho Miyano fled the clutches of the Black Organization, she fled to Shinichi's house but collapsed from exhaustion before Agasa's doorstep. Agasa subsequently took her in, learned about her true identity and helped her establish her new identity as Ai Haibara. He also entrusted Shinichi's parents with the secret about what has happened to their son.
Ever since these beginnings, Agasa has been an invaluable friend for Shinichi and the Detective Boys as a confidant, paternal friend, and someone to hang out with. He often takes the children on trips, most of which turn into criminal cases instead.

Childhood and relatives

Agasa went to Teitan Elementary and then Okuho middle school. His family moved to Japan from abroad soon after the end of fall term of his sixth grade after he met Fusae Kinoshita. Agasa was living in Japan before his family moved and he may have changed his address when they arrived. He has a rich accountant uncle named Kurisuke Agasa who died 50 years before the present timeline at the age of 38. The uncle liked gadgets. Teiko, the sister of his uncle (Agasa’s aunt) was alive until a year ago when she passed away at 76. Agasa’s cousin’s granddaughter is of the right age to be introduced to Takagi.

Personality

Hiroshi Agasa is a jovial and outgoing person and has many friends in his community, a fact which helped him in his covering up of Conan's and Haibara's true origins (he simply claims that they are the children of his friends and acquaintances).
Agasa has a special love for pasta and tomato juice.

Relationships analysis

Family & Friends

Shinichi Kudo/Conan Edogawa

Conan treats Agasa as a member of his own family, like an uncle. Due to the fact that they both share the secret behind Shinichi's transformation and knowledge about the Black Organization, Conan often comes to him when in trouble or seeking for help.

Ai Haibara

The relationship between Haibara and Professor Agasa is rather unusual, if not humorous. Despite what their actual (and apparent) ages are, Haibara often times acts more like a mother to the professor, constantly reminding him to watch what he eats. On several occasions, she has removed fattening foods from his reach, and is attempting to help get him into better shape. There have also been instances where she'll instinctively step in front of Agasa to protect him from danger.
Out of all the people she's met, Haibara seems most comfortable about acting herself with Agasa; which might be attributed to the fact that he was the one who found her after she escaped the Black Organization, and took her in. As it turned out some time later, Agasa had known her parents - especially her father, Atsushi Miyano, personally, even though he didn't know at that time that they've had children.

Yusaku Kudo

Agasa and Yusaku are good friends together.

Sixth Grade Agasa with Fusae Campbell

Fusae Campbell

Fusae Campbell, today a successful fashion designer, was Agasa's first love in their childhood years. Because of her half-American heritage she has blonde hair, which had made her the target of ridicule among her fellow students and thus made her very shy; she usually wore a large hat to conceal her hair. Right after she found her first love in Agasa, she had to move away, but promised to return every ten years to a special place to meet him again. However, in his forgetfulness Agasa misplaced the postcard on which she had placed her clues, and it took him forty years and the help of the Detective Boys to find the place again. While they did not openly talk about their feelings, there is a hint that their relationship is now beginning to grow.

Sonoko Suzuki

Sonoko Suzuki (Suzuki Sonoko), known in the Funimation English dub as Serena Sebastian, is a character from the manga and anime Detective Conan. Sonoko is Ran Mouri's best friend, and is the girlfriend of Makoto Kyogoku, with whom she currently is in a long-distance relationship. Conan Edogawa sometimes has to knock her out with his stun gun watch to use her as "Deduction Queen Sonoko". Because of this, Sonoko has claimed to be a great high school detective in her own right.

Background

Sonoko is the daughter of Tomoko and Shiro Suzuki, the extremely wealthy family of a large company. She has a sister, Ayako, and an uncle named Jirokichi, who is often involved in trying to capture the Kaitou Kid.

Personality

Sonoko is rather expressive.

Before she began dating Makoto, Sonoko displayed the typical girl her age, acting very boy-crazy, and often mostly thinking about trying to snag the "perfect boy." She would often act sad because she couldn't get a boyfriend, using all necessary means to try and get one. She often dressed in clothes meant to attract boys, and would try to sweet talk her way into being with a boy, by making him chocolates, trying to impress a boy while wearing a bikini, or going to various events that young guys were going to attend. Ran, in the meanwhile, would always be the one to unwillingly attract the boys, which would cause jealousy in Sonoko. However, this all changed when Sonoko met and began dating Makoto.
Sonoko loves using her money to go on big vacations, like expensive ski trips, and loves to buy fancy clothes and items. Also, she is a sugar and sweets glutton, and loves to go to festivals where sugary sweets are on display, often picking up gigantic plates filled with various cakes. She has even used Conan for the sole purpose of having a children's discount on food. She is also a big fan of the band LEX, and various other people in pop music, including Two-Mix.
Conan has had to use Sonoko sometimes, when he needs to do a deduction show. At first, he sometimes struggled to copy Sonoko's mannerism's down, but now is used to it. However, because he has had to use Sonoko so often for a deduction, Sonoko, like Kogoro Mouri, completely buys into her whole "sleeping" person, calling her self the best detective in Teitan High School, and a "Deduction Queen." This makes Conan sometimes completely regret using her to solve a case, though he does admire her courage in certain situations. Sonoko is shown to not be completely clueless, and is sometimes able to solve little things on her own, and can figure things out when she is provided some assistance by Conan, like in The Suspicious Spicy Curry, when Conan had to communicate to Sonoko, Kogoro, and Yamamura in charades and sign language.
Sonoko is a big fanatic of the Kaitou Kid, thinking that not only is he very handsome, but is also herself a very big fan of him, cheering him on in trying to steal something, even when that something is a rare treasure of the Suzuki family! She wishes to meet the Kid up close, and sometimes almost gets her wish, but is very disappointed when she doesn't.

Appellations

Appearance

Sonoko often wears a bandanna backing up her fringe, skirt, random clothes covering the top. Her clothes often show more skin, in comparison to Ran, mostly for the purpose of attracting guys. In Countdown to Heaven, she temporarily changes her hairstyle to a perm.

Plot overview

Deduction Queen Sonoko (Manga: 40-44, Anime: 34-35)

Deduction Queen Sonoko appears!

Conan and Ran visit Sonoko's mountain villa to see the autumn leaves and meet up with some old friends. On the way to the front they see a strange bandaged man in a dark cloak crossing the bridge. When they see him he turns around, shocking them with his face and eye contact as he quickly makes a retreat around the side of the house. Everything seems fine as Ran tries to find her room, accidentally walking in on the boys of the house. When everyone is asked about the bandaged man he is brushed off as possibly a crazy man with nothing better to do. However he is taken far more seriously when later one of the girls is seen being carried off by him from the windows, the boys give chase and find her dismembered body in the woods.
He had previously attacked Ran in the woods earlier, but ran off when Conan gave chase. Everyone panics and decides that it's best to go to bed for the night, when he strikes again, this time trying to kill Ran in her sleep. Conan kicks Ran out of the way, using his bow-tie to wake her up, she freezes up as Conan grabs for him, but he is thrown against the bed, twisting his ankle. The bandaged man quickly makes a hasty retreat, leaving Conan to wonder why he is targeting Ran. Everyone decides to stay up for the night and keep together to throw off the murderous man in bandages. Conan suspects that Ran saw something that made her a target for the bandaged man, and the culprit is one of the people staying there. The rush for remembrance is on as Conan desperately tries to solve the mystery before the bandaged man strikes again.
After the investigation, Conan solve the case. Kogoro isn't there to be put to sleep, so he decides to solve the case by Ran. But when he shoots the anesthetic needle, Sonoko appears and she falls asleep. Conan reveals, by Sonoko, the killer is Ryoichi Takahashi. Sonoko is very proud, she thinks she settled the case. She was in love with Masaru Ohta, but already isn't. Currently, Conan often uses Sonoko for solving cases.

An important date (Manga: 105-107, Anime: 32)

At the end of the case, Conan asks Ran if she meets Shiro Wakaoji, a young man who was in the coffee shop. She says no, but Shiro is interested by Ran. When he begin to flirt with her, Sonoko arrives. She was his autentic date! Sonoko, very angry, hits him and goes out from there.

Makoto's Introduction (Manga: 219-221, Anime: 153-154)

Sonoko, Ran, and Conan go to Izu because of Sonoko's schemes to get a man. At the beach, Sonoko takes a picture of Ran fixing her bathing suit and threatens to send the picture to Shinichi. Sonoko is upset about her lack of love life. However, a college student approaches the girls and asks Sonoko to lunch. He appears to be romantically interested and asks Sonoko to dinner as well. They agree to meet at their lodgings later that day. The college student tells the group a story about a brunette that was murdered a year ago and now haunts the restaurant he wants to dine at. The group then finds out that another brunette was murdered in the woods recently in the same manner as the brunette from a year ago.

The serial killer tries to kill Sonoko...

The group goes to the crime scene and meet Sango Yokomizo who cautions them to stay safe. Sonoko, Ran, and Conan are staying at a cheap Ryokan because Sonoko doesn't want to scare men away by staying at an expensive luxury hotel. In the evening, the three of them wait for the college student to pick them up in his car. Sonoko realizes that she forgot something in her room and goes back up to get it. Here she discovers a suspicious figure searching her bags. The figure attacks her and is about to stab her with a knife when Ran and Conan, worried about the time Sonoko is taking, come to find her.
Sonoko is saved and the figure escapes through the window. The stoic, and somewhat unfriendly, high school student (Makoto Kyogoku) that is working at the Ryokan moves the group to another room. Ran thinks she has seen this person somewhere before but cannot remember where. The college student shows up muddy and wet and Conan suspects him of attacking Sonoko. Sonoko says she bit the attacker's bicep in her struggle and Conan makes the college student take off his shirt. However, the college student does not have a bite mark on his arm. Makoto has a bandaged bicep and falls under suspicion but Sonoko says he wasn't the attacker since the attacker was hairy. The college student, Sonoko, Ran, and Conan decide to have dinner at the Ryokan because the college student says his car broke down. Conan speculates that Sonoko's attacker was looking for the photographs she was taking during the trip, but cannot figure out why. Conan does not think there are any incriminating photos. Perhaps the murderer overheard Sonoko talking about the photographs and misunderstood. This case is still full of mysteries and Conan cannot figure out why Sonoko was attacked.
Later, Michiwaki (the student), Ran and Conan go to eat to a restaurant, and Sonoko is in Michiwaki's car, sleepy. Suddenly, the car gets on and Sonoko is, again, near the death. When they go to the police station, Sonoko and Michiwaki enter into the forest. There, Michiwaki tries to kill Sonko: he is the serial killer! Finally, when Sonoko thinks she is going to death, Makoto appears and save her. Michiwaki is arrested and Makoto says to Sonoko he is in love whit her, but he must goes abroad. Currently, Sonoko is involved with Makoto.

Jodie's Introduction (Manga: 271-273, Anime: 226-227)

Sonoko, Ran, and Conan are at the arcade where they meet their High School English teacher, Jodie Saintemillion who is an avid gamer. Jodie introduces Ran to a virtual reality fighting game which uses mechanics to simulate a real fight. Ran loses to a gamer named Kengo Bito who taunts her in her lost. Bito plays the game again his rival, Takayasu Shimizu; The battle is projected on a large screen. Bito's avatar overwhelms Shimizu's but stops at the climax of the match. The people in the arcade realize Bito is dead and the police are called in. The police investigate; after reviewing the security camera's footage, they limit the suspects down to four people, a middle aged man, an employee, Shimizu, and Jodie.

Sonoko thinks about Makoto

The autopsy reveals the poison to be Tetrodotoxin; a poison that causes instant paralysis and death soon after. Conan investigates and learns the method and the culprit who murdered Bito. Conan tranquilizes Sonoko and impersonates her; declaring Shimizu to be the murderer. Conan reveals that Shimizu was the one playing Bito's avatar in order disguise the fact Bito was already dead. As for the weapon, Conan explains Shimizu hid a needle inside a cigarette, put gum around it, wrapped it around paper and had it stuck to the employee's shoes. As certain evidence, Conan reveals that a coin with Shimizu's fingerprints should be found in Bito's arcade machine. Shimizu confesses revealing Bito's gambling and debt caused his sister to develop Vitamin A deficiency and resulting in her blindness. As Sonoko, Ran, and Jodie leave the arcade, their discussion leads to Shinichi whom Jodie dubs as Cool Guy; She says goodbye whilst calling Conan Cool Guy and leaves. That night, Jodie calls an unknown person discussing how her target, the Rotten Apple has changed appearance.

Girl Clubbing Case (Manga: 284-286, Anime: 217-218)

Ran and Sonoko are shopping for a sweater as Sonoko wants to buy for Makoto Kyogoku; Sonoko gets scolded by Ran when she learns that Sonoko wants to make it pass as if she had knitted the sweater for him. Sonoko arrives to the pasta shop right then and upon seeing the girls's pictures she identifies them as Ganguro, girls who change their looks drastically to look fashionable and exotic and as a way to rebel against Japanese society. Sonoko calls Ran to ask where she is. She says she's in a parking lot and then she screams in terror because she has just found another victim. Said victim is a 20 year old girl named Tae Aizawa, who used to work at the same store: again, a very young woman with bleached hair, tanned skin, and wearing the special jewelry gifts. Unlike the others, however, Aizawa is actually dead. After discussing some more details, Takagi returns and confirms the information already given. Conan and Ran see that Sonoko isn't with them; Ran mentions that Sonoko was supposed to go to the car and then to the restroom, and then Conan realizes that Sonoko was wearing platform boots... like all the victims. Ran calls Sonoko to her cellphone, and Sonoko says she's looking for a safe way out since the lights are out. She then gets scared since it looks like she's being followed, and as she turns, the culprit is right in front of her and she starts screaming.

Sonoko... saved!?

Sonoko manages to avoid the culprit's pipe and throws her phone at him, revealing his face. She tries running downstairs, with the man being horrified since she saw him clearly. Conan says that the killer saw Sonoko with Mouri's keys and mistook her for the driver, hence why he's chasing her now. Sonoko's phone lands near a purikura machine located near a restaurant in the tenth floor, so they deduce Sonoko and the killer are not too far away from it. Megure takes active part in commanding the police, and both Matsumoto and Mouri notice how pumped up he is. Sonoko runs aimlessly in the tenth floor, and when she's about to reach the gates she trips over her boots and falls to the ground. Ran and the police find her phone on the stairs and deduce she's in the apartment store as no one has seen her in the restaurants. Meanwhile, the maddened killer starts ranting about how all the fashionable girls are bitches in sheep's clothing who should be all killed. Sonoko screams again and this time Ran, Conan, Megure and Co. hear her; they also hear the sound of several things falling, Go stones among them, which allow them to see she's now on the fourth floor (the only one with such arrangments). Sonoko again dodges the pipe, as the culprit rants about how he only wanted to teach her a lesson, but after seeing his face, he had to kill her. Cornered again, Sonoko cowers as he tries to hit her directly... and then Megure shows up. He takes the hit for her and gets struck in the head, but the blow is softened by his hat. At the end, Ran and Sonoko are moved to tears, thinking Megure's girlfriend died.

Murderous Pottery Class (Manga: 305-307, Anime: 228-229)

Sonoko looking at Ran's vessel.

Sonoko tells Ran she is attending pottery classes to make a gift to Makoto, a big vessel. Ran decides to join too. One day, Conan follows the girls to the pottery class. Ran is making an earthel vessel and Sonoko wants to see that, but Ran doesn't want. Joking, the vessel fell. All the class heard a noise, and Sonoko thins Ran's vessel is broken. But no, Ran has got the vessel in her hand. Conan, Ran, and all the class go to find the origin of the noise, and Sonoko attempts to uncover Ran's vessel. Ran tells her if she do it, their friendship will be broken. Motoo Mino is killed and they try to discover the truth. Suddenly, Conan find out the truth: the master murdered Motoo! The little detective uses 'Deduction Queen Sonoko' to solve it.
At the end, she is talking with Ran and Conan, and they see a photo that Makoto send to Sonoko. In the photo, he is with friends and he put flowers in Sonoko's vessel. She is sad because he thought it was a vase.

Bloody Valentine (Manga: 331-334, Anime: 266-268)

Halloween Party (Manga: 429-434, Anime: 345)

Sonoko as a witch

Kogoro Mouri receives an invitation to a Halloween cruise; the Halloween cruise is famous for hiring guests to star in a horror film. At the beginning, Sonoko is making-up Kogoro as a monster, specifically as a vampire. He can bring a friend, and Sonoko wants to go with him because Ran doesn't want, she is afraid by zombies, witches and monsters in general. The day of the party, she goes with Kogoro there, wearing a witch costume. When they are in a taxi, the taxi driver was disguised as a monster too and scared them. Family & Friends

Ran Mouri

Sonoko hugging Ran

Sonoko and Ran have been best friends ever since they were little. Sonoko is often there to help Ran whenever she is bullied by other school children, more often there than even Shinichi was. They were often shown hanging out with each others on the way home after school. Sonoko usually invite Ran to join her on trips, attend some activities of her family (most of the times are her uncle's showdowns with Kaitou Kid), even enjoy expensive services, or simply just go shopping together.
Sonoko once said to a murderer what she thought about friendship: "So what if friendship is unreliable and fragile! That way when you communicate with your heart, you can feel the warmth inside. If it were as hard as some chattering iron plate, you wouldn’t feel the warmth, y’know?"
Meanwhile, even though Ran knows that Sonoko has a lot of money, she always makes sure that money never gets involved in their friendship, not going to ski vacations with Sonoko because she doesn't have the money, when she knows that Sonoko would pay for her to go. This, along with other things, has helped strengthen the bond between both Ran and Sonoko.
Before meeting the man of her own, Sonoko was sometimes envious that Ran always got the attentions from boys, however, this didn't affect the deep friendship between them.

Conan Edogawa

Whenever Conan is near at Sonoko, she gets annoyed.

Makoto Kyogoku

Sonoko originally met Makoto Kyogoku while on a vacation, when he worked at his father's hotel in his spare time. At first, neither she, Conan, nor Ran recognized him, because he wore glasses to hide his features. He later saves her when he takes a knife in the arm for her, to protect her from getting killed by a crazed serial killer. This is when Ran finally realizes that he is the famous karate champion. After defeating the killer, he confesses his feelings for her, which leaves Sonoko dumbfounded and flustered. According to Makoto, he originally met Sonoko during one of Ran's tournaments, and loved how feisty and firey she was in trying to cheer her friend on. After this, Sonoko and Makoto begin a long distance relationship.

Sonoko presenting the chocolate she made to Makoto.

Makoto often saves Sonoko from dangerous peril, like in a snow lodge, and in a forest. Sonoko loves to use some kind of concocted scheme to get Makoto to come to her, usually in some romantic way, to create a romantic and dreamy experience for her. This, however, doesn't always end in success, but he sometimes does stumble through her little schemes. He often warns her of the way she is dressed, because he believes that guys will try to come after her because of it.

Sonoko gives the chocolate she made to Makoto.

Sonoko often wants to show Makoto that her feelings for him are stronger than he thinks, planning simple ideas to make him feel special. However, these often go in awry, as she either cannot make what she had planned to make, like when she promised to make him a home-made sweater, but had to resort to buying one in a mall, or Makoto has no idea what she gave him is, like when he believed that the pottery she sent him was supposed to be for flowers. Sonoko keeps a photo of Makoto in her bag, and uses it as a good luck charm for when she takes exams. She has also made him a chocolate, trying to make him feel jealous by not saying who it was more, thus forcing him to visit her in a snow lodge to ask her what was going on. When he finds out that indeed, she made him the chocolate, he gets very embarrassed himself.
Although long distance relationships can be hard to be in, Sonoko has stayed faithful to Makoto, other than dreaming of meeting up with the Kaitou Kid, though this is mostly to see him up close more than anything else.

Background

Eri and her childhood friend, Yukiko Kudo.

The legally separated wife of Kogoro Mouri, Eri is a lawyer who often gets tangled in Kogoro's cases, usually serving as an extra pair of eyes when it becomes time to investigate a crime. Although she does not like Kogoro's attitude and personality (especially his drinking and skirt-chasing habits), she still deeply loves and cares for him, often testing him to see if he still cares about her as well.
Eri and Kogoro, like Shinichi and Ran, had been best friends since childhood, falling in love in their teens. Ran had believed that Eri had separated from Kogoro because he had shot her in the leg to get her away from a crazed serial killer, when in fact Eri had completely respected Kogoro for his decision, which she also believed was the correct one. She had actually left him when she had cooked him a gratitude dinner afterwards, which Kogoro assessed (perhaps rightfully) to be completely horrible. After this, Eri focused full time on her duties as a lawyer and has since become a highly respected (and feared) member of her profession.
In high school, Eri and her schoolmate and close friend, Yukiko Kudo, were involved in a "Miss Teitan High School" pagaent, and were tied in the number of votes, due to the lateness of Kogoro. He had forgotten to vote, and by the time he had come to vote, it was too late. It was later discovered that due to his clumsiness, he thought that the "Miss" meant "mistake" and was going to vote for Eri as a result of that misconception, much to her anger later on.

Personality

Eri's pet cat, Goro, whom she named after Kogoro.

Eri is considered incredibly attractive. Various men of different ages have pined for her, but she always turns them down, mostly due to her feelings for Kogoro. She and Yukiko were considered the two most beautiful girls at Teitan High School back when they were students. However, even though the result ended in a tie, the two remained very close friends, often letting little Shinichi and Ran play together and have playdates. Shinichi remembers often how Eri would give him a big scolding for starting trouble.
Eri's personality suits her occupation as a lawyer. She is often very questioning, and gets herself involved in the investigation of cases along with Kogoro, much to his chagrin. She has a cat, a Russian Blue named "Goro," whom she cares for very deeply; in fact, Goro's name comes from "KoGORO" of Kogoro Mouri, since to her the cat and Kogoro both act very similar in some ways. Eri is also very close friends with her secretary, Midori Kuriyama.
Eri is highly intelligent and has a sharp eye for details, and is also a skilled judoka, taught by Kogoro himself. She has proven on more than one occasion that she can lend a big helping hand in cases, and her deductions are almost always accurate. She considers Conan a big help in murder cases. At first, Eri was a little suspicious of Conan, but later just concludes that he is a boy who is very smart for his age, even helping him in showing off deduction shows. Ran often goes to Eri for advice, especially on Ran's relationship with Shinichi. Eri has often half jokingly said that her best advice for Ran is to never get involved with a detective.

Plot overview

Love of Lawyer Eri Kisaki

Her worrying about Goro has once caused a big misunderstanding with Ran, thinking that a veternarian was trying to go out with Eri when he was only trying to help her cat (although it is shown in the end that he was really hoping to get involved with her).

Kogoro Mouri

Kogoro and Eri

Even though Eri is separated from Kogoro, and has been for quite some time, she still cares for him, and loves him. She often mentions that she would go back to him if he would just be a little bit nicer and not act immaturely to her. Very often, she sees Kogoro treat her nicely and gets hope, but then he does something stupid that angers her again, ruining any hope she has of them being back together. She remembers many very important dates in their relationship, and it is found out that she and Kogoro share many things in their minds, including the idea of wearing the outfits both wore on their first date on its anniversary (each of them made this decision independently). Very often, their daughter, Ran, tries to get them to hook up with each other by planning out ways for them to see each other out of the blue. Ran also tries getting Eri to help give Kogoro clients.

Eri with hair down while getting a hair cut.

In The Fourteenth Target, Eri and Kogoro are shown having a great time eating dinner, but it ends when Kogoro looks out the window and sees the very attractive owner of the bar that he visits. This makes Eri turn angry and act how she normally acts to Kogoro. In the two-part episode, Scuba Diving Murder Case, Eri accidentally loses her wedding ring on the beach, but pretends to have left it at home to see if Kogoro noticed. She gets visibly angry when Kogoro doesn't appear to notice it, especially when he leaves their lunch early to go back to the beach. Later, it is discovered that Kogoro had always known that she wasn't wearing her wedding ring, and had gone back to the beach to look for it. This left a visibly shocked Eri to drive home speechless, but pleased.
In another episode, Eri actually captures a confession from Kogoro saying that he misses her and wishes she would come back to him on a minidisc, replaying it over and over again afterwards. However, even though they both miss each other, both of them still pretend not to care, and even become incredibly nasty to each other. Kogoro even goes on the opposing side of a case that Eri is working on, in a plan done by her professional rival Reiko Kujo to try and get under Eri's skin. However, her plan fails, as Kogoro's testimony is able to help out Eri's case instead of Reiko's.

Yusaku Kudo

Yusaku Kudo (Kudō Yūsaku) is the father of Shinichi Kudo and, along with his wife Yukiko, is one of only a few characters to know he is Conan Edogawa. He is also a world famous novelist and the creator of the popular Night Baron series.

Background

Young Yusaku.

Yusaku Kudo was already noted for his sharp intellect and deductive abilities at a young age. He met Inspector Juzo Megure and became a good friend and valuable adviser to him in solving very difficult cases. While he often assisted the police, Yusaku's primary aspiration was that of a writer. Quickly attracting acclaim in his early twenties as a young novelist, he encountered the girl whom he resolved to marry: Yukiko Fujimine, an already famed and beautiful actress. While taking her out in an expensive restaurant to make his proposal, he was involved in a murder case which he solved brilliantly, and right afterward proposed to a startled Yukiko - which she accepted. (Twenty years later, his son Shinichi would become involved in a follow-up of the exact same case, but unlike Yusaku he wouldn't be able to profess his feelings to his own love.)
Yusaku's detective stories have won international acclaim, especially his novels involving the character called Night Baron, who has become a popular cultural item. He prefers to be known as a novelist, despite multiple demonstrations of a Mycroftian tendency to solve a case before Shinichi reaches the same conclusions. In the course of his career, he also encountered the first Kaitou Kid and struck a sort of competitive friendship with him; it is implied that Yusaku knew Kid's identity, but chose to chase Kid only during heists in order to foil the theft and no further.
After Shinichi becomes Conan, Yusaku learns from Agasa what occurred and stages an elaborate false kidnapping to drive home to Conan what the stakes are if he is caught by the Black Organization. He offers to take Conan to a new life in America, but understands when Shinichi refuses due to a desire for independence and feelings for Ran - though Yusaku doesn't expect that resolve to last. He and Yukiko occasionally check up on Conan, but seem content to respect Shinichi's wishes to pursue the Black Organization without their help.

Personality

Yusaku Kudo possesses a very sharp intellect and observation skills, traits which his son inherited, though Yusaku's own abilities remain more well-honed. He demonstrates in multiple cases an ability to operate one step ahead of both Shinichi and criminals, but he chooses to not get involved unless Conan appears unable solve the case alone in time to save the intended victim. His success as a novelist is to a large part based on his keen understanding of the criminal mind, as his most famous recurring character is a criminal. While he is an excellent author, he will occasionally blow off his editors in order to do other things, such as travel with Yukiko. He is very laid back and calm, never seen to lose his temper. Some might think him too laid back, as he often took his son to crime scenes before Shinichi was eleven, and showed no concern over six-year-old Shinichi dragging Ran and Agasa into a potentially dangerous area of town to investigate a code. The only time he has been shown to be caught off-guard or stressed by a situation is after the false kidnapping, when Shinichi alerts Yusaku's editors to his location and they force him to make up for missing his deadlines. His less tolerable personality traits include a certain cockiness and a very bad touch at making humor.
Yusaku loves to read, and is the one who compiled the massive library of mystery fiction Shinichi read as a child. His love of Sherlock Holmes is briefly explored in the non-canon 6th movie, 'The Phantom of Baker Street', wherein Yusaku and Agasa helped develop one of the Cocoon VR modules as 19th Century London and included Holmes, Watson, and Irene Adler as non-playable characters modeled visually after Yusaku, Agasa, and Yukiko, respectively.

Yukiko Kudo

Yukiko Kudo (Kudō Yukiko) is the mother of Shinichi Kudo and, along with her husband Yusaku, one of few characters who knows he is Conan Edogawa. She was once a famous actress, but retired after marrying Yusaku. She was also close friends with fellow actress, Sharon Vineyard, both being excellent masters of disguise.

Anime: Episode 43
Appearances: Chapters: 53
Episodes: 27
Movies: 1
OVAs: 3
Openings: 7
Closings: 1
Keyhole number: Volume 14

Background

Yukiko was born in the Tosa Province (today's Kochi Prefecture, located in the southern portion of Shikoku), and became a fan of Sakamoto Ryoma after having played the part of his older sister Otome in a historical drama. (This role also made her internationally famous as a talented actress.)
Despite her then-tender years as a student at Teitan High, Yukiko had a prospectively prosperous future in the film industry. Thus it came as a major surprise to the world when, practically out of the blue, she married Yusaku Kudo and retired from acting. She still retains good contacts in the acting and film industry, however, and has since become known as the "Night Baroness" (named after one of her husband's characters) after babbling out some clues provided by Yusaku on a live television show which helped solve a criminal case.
During her acting years, Yukiko went to a famous stage magician and disguise artist to learn the finer arts of disguise for a role she was preparing to play. There she met another actress who would become one of her closest friends, Sharon Vineyard. Until Sharon's (supposed) death, the two women stayed in touch, and Yukiko even attended her funeral, but her appearance was overshadowed by a small scandal involving Sharon's 'daughter', Chris Vineyard. Yukiko has since learned from her son about Chris/Sharon's secret life, a revelation which troubles her deeply.
Despite a certain rivalry for popularity in their high school years, which had culminated in a Miss Teitan Election, Yukiko is also a close friend of Eri Kisaki, and (unlike Eri) finds her daughter Ran Mouri, a perfect match for her son.

Personality

Yukiko and her childhood friend, Eri Kisaki.

Despite her adult age, Yukiko still behaves like a teenager. She is bubbly, overconfident and attention-seeking, and prefers to stand in the lime-light (literally) whenever possible. She can be prone to jealousy over Yusaku's occasionally flirtatious behavior, and can demonstrate impulsive tendencies. She is an extremely reckless driver and very sensitive about her age: whenever her son dares to call her "oba-chan" in Japanese (in English, the closest equivalent would be "aunt"), she sets up such a furious face that Shinichi must quickly correct himself by calling her "onee-chan" ("older sister").
However, despite her faults, Yukiko is extremely loyal and cares for both her husband and her son (though a heavy streak of mischief causes her to often tease Shinichi). Her loyalty extends to her friends, as she thinks nothing of flying across the Pacific to help a friend from elementary school. She takes pride in being an excellent actress and a mistress of disguise, able to fool even close friends and family with her skills.

Plot overview

Conan Edogawa Kidnapping Case

Yukiko first appearance was disguised as Fumiyo (Fanny in the Funimation Dub) Edogawa, a woman claiming to be Conan's mom.

The Cornered Famous Detective! Two Big Murder Cases

After having a quarrel with her husband, Yukiko secretly returned to Japan. She then meets Ran and Conan in front of her house. She successfully covered for Conan who Ran suspected at that time. It is a good one.

Bell Train arc

Yukiko turns out to be the lady who had been visiting Subaru Okiya at the Kudo house. On the Bell Tree express, with Conan and Okiya's help, she foiled Bourbon and Vermouth's plans to capture and kill Shiho Miyano respectively while also tricking the Black Organization (except for Vermouth) into thinking Sherry died. Her part of the plan involved removing Haibara from danger when she tried to run away, and then challenging Vermouth in order to draw her attention. Yukiko then kept Vermouth occupied, so that she was unaware that she was being tricked until it was too late. At the same time, Yukiko also extracted a promise from Vermouth that she would truly give up on trying to kill Sherry.
